In Canada we have been blessed with an abundance of food. Some food experts say that Toronto has the widest variety of food in the whole world. And because of the decent standard of living we all are able to eat well.
Sometimes however, we over buy, over cook, over store and over throw away.
Our refrigerators are sometimes so overstuffed that when we open the door the little foodie packages start jumping up and down saying "eat me, eat me!"
Food-containers and zip-lock bags are the ways we store our left-overs until garbage day.
In Canada, we throw away enough food each year to feed an entire poor country. We also waste a lot of water. A study has shown that the water left on the counter in our kitchens and in our bathtubs after we wash up, in a year's time, is more than the water some poor water-starved countries get for that full year.
As we enjoy our food and drink, we should always make that special effort to conserve and think about those who are in need. In addition to being a blessing, the gift of food can also be a test. The food will not get to the poor but our actions will speak to the universe and I think make a difference, and in some strange way contribute to a more just world.
Be good, eat well, be conservative and love your fellow human beings.
