Letter  from the California State Registry Committee Chair
California State Registry
Committee Chair
James I. Huddleston, III, MD

The AJRR California State Registry Committee has been busy these past few months. Representatives attended the 6th International Congress of Arthroplasty Registries, the annual meeting of the International Society of Arthroplasty Registries (ISAR) , which was held in San Francisco in May. ISAR is an organization made up of hip and knee replacement registries from around the globe. AJRR took home the award for "Best Poster Presentation" for its poster on infection burden. Overall, the meeting was successful, and it was very informative to engage with colleagues from different countries. Although registry participation is mandatory in many nations, those countries' registries have their own challenges and experiences that we can take into account to make improvements to our platform.

We held our California State Registry Committee Annual Meeting in San Francisco in conjunction with the ISAR meeting. Several pertinent topics were discussed, including the
California State Registry Committee 2016 Annual Report, the upcoming  2017 Annual Report , the submission of abstracts using California data, and the transition of AJRR technology to California hospitals. Meeting attendees were able to get answers about future data collection and what items will be needed to make California data more robust. Attendees were also filled in on the upcoming Blue Shield of California preauthorization initiative.

I would like to thank everyone who was able to make it out to the meeting, and look forward to an even bigger crowd at next year's California State Registry Committee Annual Meeting, to be held in conjunction with the California Orthopaedic Association's (COA's) annual conference.

Sincerely,

James I. Huddleston, III, MD
AJRR Gains Exposure at California Conference

The California Orthopaedic Association (COA) held its 2017 Annual Meeting/QME Course  from May 18 - 21 at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, CA. AJRR reached a wide audience of attendees with its booth and AJRR Executive Director Jeff Knezovich's 20-minute presentation about registries. Mr. Knezovich was also a part of a panel on quality reporting. Due to the large representation of Californian AJRR participants at the COA meeting, the AJRR California State Registry Committee Annu al Meeting will be held in conjunction with the 2018 COA meeting in San Francisco from May 31 - June 3.
Hospitals to Adopt New Data Specs by June 30

All California hospitals are encouraged to switch over to AJRR's new 2017 data specifications by Friday, June 30, 2017. On July 1, the AJRR platform will be changing to allow for more transparency with the data that participants submit. Although the platform may look a little different, the majority of the changes will not be noticeable to users.

Some of changes that you will see include:
  • Consolidated "Tools" and "Resources" tabs that offer training materials and documentation that supports Registry participation
  • A streamlined patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) platform
  • New two-factor identification passwords to keep up with modern security standards
Visit the AJRR User Group Network (Unet) Forum here for a copy of the new data specifications and a recording of our 2017 Data Specifications Webinar. You will need to create an account to access the forum if you do not already have one. The July platform upgrades will be discussed in greater detail at the AJRR User Group Network (Unet) Conference Call on Thursday, June 15, 2017. Click here to register for the call.
Blue Shield Initiative Slated for a Mid-July Release

Blue Shield of California's  insurance preauthorization initiative for providers that are AJRR participants is expected to launch in mid-July. These participants' patients will soon be able to automatically receive authorization for their hip or knee replacement procedures. This will allow for patients and providers to focus on what's most important: the patient's health and recovery. Blue Shield of California is giving piece of mind to patients while also saving time and money by making it easier for surgeons to prevent the duplication of their quality efforts .
