The Annual Holiday Open House Comes Home!
The Chamber is pleased to announce its 2017 Holiday Open House, which will be held on Thursday, December 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its offices at 630 Market Street in downtown Steubenville.

The Holiday Open House is a tradition that dates back to the 1980's. The Jefferson County Historical Museum served as the location for many years and then other local businesses generously hosted including the IBEW Local #246 and Create-A-Room, now Ferguson's House of Furniture, in Wintersville who partnered with Riesbeck's to host this popular holiday event.

This year, the Holiday Open House comes back home to the Chamber. If you've never visited the Chamber offices before, this is your chance to find out where we are and what all we have to offer. It's also a chance to show off our facilities and boardroom, which have undergone some major improvements over the past few years.

There is no set program so stop by any time for a snack, lunch, a hot or cold beverage or just to say hello. And don't forget the annual "Ugly Get-Up" contest with the winner taking home a $50 gift card and the traveling trophy. There's no charge, but we do ask that you RSVP so we plan for food and drink accordingly. Please RSVP by clicking here .

Final Thoughts on 2017 Election

Here are some final thoughts on what was learned from the 2017 election.

By now, you’ve seen Tuesday night’s election results. The votes on the two ballot issues were among the most lopsided ever.

Today’s Cleveland Plain Dealer offers some insight on why Issue 2 failed, a key component being widespread voter skepticism regarding the proposal. If you missed it, here’s our Ohio Chamber 2017 Election Night Blog

Nationally, the Columbus Dispatch talked about what the Democrat gains in Virginia could mean for 2018 contests in Ohio. An easy victory in the gubernatorial race and a historic shift to a near 50-50 split in the House of Delegates will give pundits and strategists a lot to discuss in the lead up to 2018. Mirroring Ohio, the VA House GOP held a 66-seat majority (out of 100) heading In to Tuesday. They’re now looking at a 50-50 tie. My question is, who came up with an even number for the House of Delegates?…. looking at you, Founding Fathers!

Reform the Tax Code and
Investment Will Be Unleashed

Reform the tax code, and investments will follow. That’s what AT&T said when it said it would invest an additional $1 billion in the U.S. economy – if Congress and the Trump administration deliver on their tax reform promise. AT&T’s commitment shows that if Congress follows through on its promises, businesses will invest more.

Congress hasn’t overhauled the tax code in 31 years, a reality businesses are painfully aware of. Today’s uncompetitive corporate system actually discourages investment in U.S. workers and communities. But the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will reform the tax code and end the era of sky-high corporate tax rates by lowering rates for businesses from 35% to 20%. Along with other key changes, this will free U.S. businesses to invest more in creating jobs and growing paychecks for their workers. As AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson said in his announcement:

By immediately lowering the corporate tax rate to 20%, this bill will stimulate investment, job creation and economic growth in the United States.

The United States Marine Corps War Memorial was dedicated in Arlington County, Virginia, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the 179th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps. Inspired by the ionic flag-raising photo on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, as captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press (see the Veterans Day dedication in this newsletter), and sculpted by Felix W. de Weldon, the Memorial is 78 feet tall and cost $850,000, all of which "was donated by the U.S. Marines, friends of the Marine Corps, and members of the Naval Service," according to the National Park Service . For more information on the Memorial, check out this article from the day of the dedication.
