As Christians, we are asked and expected to offer hospitality, kindness and mercy to all. As parishioners of Holy Comforter, we are working to fulfill these expectations by supporting local charities like FACETS, Samaritan Ministry, and Britepaths.
But did you know that Holy Comforter’s Outreach Fund also supports an international organization called Five Talents? They were founded in 1998 right here in Vienna and inspired by the Parable of the Talents and the call of Jesus to minister to the poor. Five Talents helps transform lives in Africa, Asia, and South America through economic empowerment, supporting new entrepreneurs to start small businesses.
Always working alongside local churches within the Anglican Communion, Five Talents serves the poorest and most marginalized people to create savings groups where members financially support one another’s ideas for small businesses. By helping group members learn to read, write, budget, invest, and develop their own businesses, Five Talents empowers the poor with hope and opportunity. Families recover their sense of dignity and learn to build a brighter future for their children. The savings groups have anywhere from 12 to 30 members, they meet regularly, they develop their own constitutions, and they appoint their own leadership. Through these savings groups local businesses begin and flourish, providing families with money for food, shelter, and education.
Five Talents is celebrating its 20th Anniversary and has equipped over 115,000 entrepreneurs, established 6 community-owned banks, and impacted almost a million people.
Personally, I have been involved with Five Talents for over 15 years. I currently volunteer as Treasurer of Five Talents’ Board of Directors. In this position, I can assure you that last year’s donation of $7,000 from Holy Comforter’s Outreach Fund, and an additional $1,500 from our Episcopal Church Women, have helped Five Talents to start new savings groups that empower the poor by creating hope and opportunity.
Five Talents changes lives. Thank you so very much for your continued support. If you have already contributed to our Holy Comforter Challenge, thank you. If you have not yet had the opportunity to do so, I invite you to click
