The Wuehler Family

Even if you do not have the time, money, or energy to go places far away right now, you can still have a lot of fun learning about those places right at home. As you read aloud, whether it is a classic book, history book, missionary biography, or just something that comes in the mail--whenever you come across a new place, just stop for a few minutes and point it out on a map. Research the internet; geography resources are endless and virtual field trips are numerous.

What about geography from a homeschooling perspective? Did you know you can search through back issues of the magazine and find just the articles or subjects or authors you are interested in? I am going to give you a quick, easy geography lesson on how to navigate the digital issues for what you need. This is how you do it:

1- Go to www.tosmagazine.com. On the top bar, there is a search box that looks like this:

search box

2- Type in the search box the word geography (or whatever you want to look up) press ENTER.You will see the Navigation bar open up like this:

search box 2

3- Go to the little white words on the right side advanced search and click on that. This is what you will see:

search box 3

4- From here, you can search in all of our back issues for a subject, author, or even a specific phrase.  When you have typed what you want in the search for: box, click the SEARCH button in the top center:

search

This is what will come up from the above search after pressing that button:

search

You see there are 67 PAGES of results just for
geography. The archives of the magazine on any subject or author are just a few clicks away!

We are here to help you with any subject you are struggling with. Is it burnout? What about math struggles? Do you have gifted children or special needs or struggling learners? Preschool or high school students? How about organization or summer fun ideas? Do you have a favorite author? It's all here under your SEARCH button. Give it a try and see if you find what you are looking for. If not, please email me and I will be glad to help you navigate all the treasures we have hidden here.

So, even if you can't go places physically, you can really go places with the study of geography in your own home. And don't forget the most important geography lesson of all found right in your own Bible:

"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." Mark 16:15

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." Matthew 28:19, 20

Prepare those children to preach the gospel, teach the nations, and obey their God. Best geography lesson ever. And, no matter where you go geographically, He is with you. Even right there in your own home with your own children: home where they belong.

The Familyman

Todd Wilson

There's no better time to talk about Geography-on-the-Go than when I'm about to blast off in the Familyman Mobile (RV) for a couple months of cross-country, homeschool convention travel.

I'm a huge fan of Homeschool RVing. I would have never guessed it in a thousand years. Neither my wife nor I had any RVing (or camping background) and got immersed in RVing as a direct result of what I do. Now we can't imagine our life without it and have experienced, first-hand, the huge benefits of traveling the open road in an RV.

In fact, if you're even thinking about getting an RV, you should get our RVing: the Ultimate Homeschoolers Tool Audio CD. It answers all your questions about RVing and life on the road.

My other advice is, if you're thinking about doing some Geography-on-the-GO ... you should do it because you're running out of time. Gas isn't getting any cheaper, and the Grand Canyon isn't getting any closer!!! Don't be afraid. Just do it ... SOON!!!!

Be Real,

Todd

PS. You can see my Homeschool convention schedule here. Make sure you stop by and say, "Hey!"

Raising Real Men

Last year, as we made our way around the country speaking, our littlest would rouse up every few hours and say querulously, "Where are we?" "Tennessee," or "South Dakota," or "Saskatchewan," we'd answer and she'd reply, "Oooo-kaaaay," as if she were just making sure somebody knew where we were!

That's one way our children have learned geography. Here are some other ways we've learned it along the way:

Maps in the kitchen. For years we had a world map and a United States map on our kitchen table (yeah, it's huge). We bought clear plastic by the yard at a discount store to cover it. We had so many discussions about the "where" of current events over supper that included something like, "It's in Indonesia, right there under the green beans!" Now we have a big North America map on the wall where we trace out our upcoming speaking trips for the year.

Maps in the van. Put maps for all the places you go in the van. Even with GPS and Google Maps, it'll help orient your children--and yourself--when you can spread out a map and look at the big picture.

Apps. As I write this, two of my children have their heads together over "Stack the States," a geography app on my Android tablet. They love to play games on it occasionally and really, they seem to enjoy the educational ones as much or more than the mindless ones.

Books set around the world. Once one of our sons was in the finals of the state level of the National Geographic Bee. They asked him one question that made my heart sink. I had no idea what the answer was and I know a lot about geography. I was stunned when he answered it correctly. "How in the world did you know that?" I asked him when it was over. "Remember that G.A. Henty novel you got mad at me for reading when I should have been doing school last week? It was With Peterborough in Spain and it happened right on that plain!" Ooooo-kaaaaay. Sometimes the Lord teaches us humility!

Like most things, if we just live life intentionally, thinking, "What can I teach my children here?" rather than "How can I entertain myself?" we'll find it's really pretty easy to teach our kids all kinds of amazing things!
