2018 Florida-Quebec Forum

The Florida Bar International Law Section and Quebec Bar are organizing the 2018 Florida-Quebec Forum at the Fort Lauderdale Hilton Hotel on  March 16, 2018 , focusing on American-Canadian Business and Investment topics. Main theme is: "Legal & Tax Pointers for Business & Investments Success". This Forum is dedicated to improve relations between colleagues of the NAFTA legal & professional communities, including lawyers, solicitors, accountants, bankers, judges and civil law notaries. 

Outstanding lecturers include eminent legal practitioners and academics practicing in international investment, tax and business laws between United States and Canada.  This Forum will be a great opportunity to participle to a professional seminar of a high quality, obtain strategies and opinions regarding technical and legal questions from experts and develop your business network in Florida and Quebec.

White and Case International Arbitration Lecture

The University of Miami School of Law's International Arbitration Institute invites you to "Reflect on the 60th Anniversary of the 1958 U.N. Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards - The New York Convention," featuring Professor Dr. Albert Jan van den Berg, founding partner at Hanotiau & van den Berg, Brussels and the most prominent expert on the New York Convention, as well as lead counsel in the highest-stakes enforcement case in the history of that treaty. CALL FOR JUDGES - Stetson International Environmental Moot Court
 
Stetson University is hosting the International Finals of its Twenty-Second Annual International Environmental Moot Court Competition March 22-24, 2018, at its Gulfport campus, and is calling qualified ILS members to judge a round of the competition. 
 
The theme for this year's problem is responses to highly pathogenic avian influenza and transboundary wetlands. For a preview, you can find the record at  www.stetson.edu/iemcc
 
Times available for judging

Thursday, March 22, 2018
Preliminary Round 1:              6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. (check-in at 5:15 p.m.)
 
Friday, March 23, 2018
Preliminary Round 2:              9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon (check-in at 8:15 a.m.)
Preliminary Round 3:              1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. (check-in at 12:15 p.m.)
Preliminary Round 4:              5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. (check-in at 4:15 p.m.)
                                                                                                                                               
To register as a judge, please complete the electronic judges' registration form by Monday, March 5, available at  https://stetsonlaw.formstack.com/forms/judge_registration_iemcc .  
Check-in time is 45 minutes before the start of the round. You will be provided with the bench memorial and other materials as we get closer to the competition. 
 
This year's International Finals will have teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. At least 20 teams are expected to participate.
 
Stetson has applied for CLE lecture credits for your time spent judging this competition and want to be sure you are aware of changes instituted by The Florida Bar: Effective December 13, 2013, attorneys cannot claim more than 9 credit hours for judging moot court or mock trial competitions during a three-year CLER reporting cycle.

ILS Retreat

Our Section Retreat will take place on May 18-20, 2018.  Because of the proximity of the new Retreat dates to our annual Section meeting at the Florida Bar's Annual Convention, the Florida Bar ILS annual Section meeting will take place at the Retreat on May 18-20, 2018, in Bonita Springs.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa in Bonita Springs at the rate of $199 single/double occupancy. Reservations can be made by calling the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa at (888) 421-1442.  Refer to group "Florida Bar International Law." Reservations must be made before April 27, 2018 or until sold out.  After April 27, 2018, the group rate will be granted on a space available basis. 
 
The group rate is available three days pre- and post-conference based on hotel availability, and the resort fee of $30 per day has been waived. This program includes welcome beverage for 2 at check-in, self-parking, 2 bottles of water daily in guestroom, coffee maker w/complementary coffee & tea, daily newspaper, 24-hour fitness center, 3 pools, lawn games, lazy river access and inner tubes, ferry transportation to the resort's secluded island, beach chairs and umbrellas at the resort's beach, rock climbing wall, bicycle rentals, resort trolley transportation to marina, Raptor Bay Golf Course and Coconut Point Mall (3 x daily), DVD rentals, golf bag storage, electric car charging stations and 10% discount off services at Stillwater Spa.
