February 2017

Throughout 2017 , you will see celebratory signs of our 35th year, including our upcoming IREC@35 event in Washington, DC, March 8th. It's an evening to come together in support of a clean sustainable energy future, with IREC friends, supporters and partners to revel in our collective achievements, and acknowledge the legendary accomplishments of our dear friend and respected colleague, IREC President Emeritus Jane Weissman.

We'll be releasing a report that day, IREC IMPACT@35, which highlights the results of IREC's impactful work over more than three decades. And we'll be presenting IREC Energy Hero awards to a few others in public and private service whose important work brings us closer to a future where more Americans can enjoy the benefits of clean, sustainable energy.

In the meantime, our regulatory and workforce teams are busy polishing up several new resources and initiatives, for policymakers, industry and allied industry professionals. While you'll see these released in the coming months, one new resource is announced in this IREC Report, Five Guiding Principles for Shared Renewable Energy, a new addition to the IREC Model Rules for Shared Renewable Energy Programs.

Here's to a busy, productive, successful 2017 that acknowledges our history and our shared vision for the future - a world powered by clean sustainable energy , where society's interests are valued and protected.

Celebrate how far we've come, the transformative leadership that shaped today's clean energy landscape, and our collective continued commitment to a strong sustainable future!

Join national leaders in the clean energy industry, elected officials, policymakers and advocates as we acknowledge our milestones and honor the legendary accomplishments of our esteemed colleague and very own energy hero, Jane Weissman, on March 8, 2017 at an evening reception in Washington, D.C.

Jane Weissman - the catalyst for much of IREC's success over the past two decades -  is a true trailblazer in the renewable energy arena. She made possible much of IREC's transformational accomplishments. As a result, millions more of us now enjoy safe, simple, affordable access to clean renewable energy, while new tools empower us with information and confidence.

The national market for shared renewable energy programs has grown significantly since the launch of IREC's Model Rules for Shared Renewable Energy Programs in 2009 and the update of those rules in mid-2013. Today, there is increasing interest in shared renewables, along with many more mandatory statewide and voluntary utility programs. This week, IREC releases Five Guiding Principles for Shared Renewable Energy - to provide a timely update to the guiding principles that appeared in IREC's original model rules. MORE
First FireFighters Benefit from New In-Person Solar Training

"This training was great.
We can take what we learned
and immediately put those
skills to work."

Exponential growth in solar means more firefighters are increasingly coming into contact with solar installations when responding to emergencies. In recent weeks, IREC and partners - the
International Association of Fire
Fighters (IAFF) and National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) - launched the first of 30 in-person training opportunities for firefighters to become solar smarter, so they are confident making swift, safe decisions in an emergency situation where solar technology is present.

GEARED Network Makes Strong Showing at DistribuTECH 2017
GEARED is on the front line of preparing the next generation of power systems professionals who will drive innovations for the modern grid with increased distributed renewable energy. So for the second year, GEARED (Grid Engineering for Accelerated Renewable Energy Deployment) faculty and students played an important role at DistribuTECH 2017. For two days, more than 50 students displayed their cutting edge distributed energy research through posters. A full house listened to a mega session panel of utility professionals on ways to update skills of incumbent utility workers while developing relevant curriculum to build a robust power systems workforce for today's students. And GEARED students engaged with industry, other undergraduate and graduate students and even local high schoolers to talk about their decision to pursue power engineering. MORE
of note...

For the first time, IREC and the GEARED consortia, with industry support from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), will attend  TechAdvantage 2017 , the annual technology conference for electric utility co-op professionals. A number of activities are planned for the GEARED student network.
  • Students from MARMET consortium university partners will present their research to a panel of judges in a poster session on February 28. The winning student will be recognized at an award ceremony on March 1.
  • GEARED students and faculty will tour the microgrid lab at UC-San Diego.

Recently in a webinar, IREC and other members from DOE's Solar Market Pathways (SMP) team  shared valuable and practical tools and resources for communities that want to go solar. IREC's Sara Baldwin Auck gave the overview of the newly created Community Solar Toolkit. More webinars are in the queue for 2017. The complete list of community solar tools and resources, including several from IREC, can be found on the SMP website.
