THE IMPORTANCE OF ADVOCACY
Brother Paul (left), David (center) and Sharon (right) are among our staff who attend weekly outreach meetings convened by the city of Boston

At common cathedral we know the importance of advocating for our community, of empowering our members to advocate effectively for themselves, and of developing a better working partnership with other agencies and with the city of Boston.

Every week one of our staff attends an outreach meeting convened by the city, comprised of representatives from the city's homeless outreach and emergency services and Boston Healthcare for the Homeless.

All these groups come together to discuss the trends, needs and struggles of people living on the streets of Boston.

The participation of  common cathedral  staff has allowed us to grow a strong working relationship with the other care providers and better support and advocate for our community.

CELEBRATING OUR PREACHING INTERNS
Our Super Interns are on the move, assisting with our various programs as well as gaining valuable preaching experience on behalf of common cathedral!

On Sunday March 4th, Episcopal Postulant and common cathedral intern Sarah Brock preached about our community to the congregation of Cambridge's Faith Lutheran Church and also, as pictured above,  to those attending chapel services at Tufts University in Medford.

On Sunday March 11th, intern Allan McClendon delivered a message on the Boston Common about how we are all looked for and cared for by God. Allan's message invited us to reflect on where we need support and light to help make it through to Easter.

On Sunday March 18th, intern Michelle Ashley preached on the Boston Common, reminding us that Jesus came to expose our human system of violence and domination, calling us instead to join in bringing about abundant life for all.

CITYREACH UPDATE

At our March CityReach we hosted a "full house" comprised of students and chaperones from seven different churches.

In addition to Friday night outdoor walking tours and storytelling, our Saturday morning clothing and food open house welcomed hundreds  of  Boston's unhoused citizens.

At the conclusion of each program the group writes a prayer together. Here is this group's prayer:

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER
Our Palm Sunday procession on the Boston Common

Palm Sunday

Hosanna! Our procession on the Common took us around Brewer Fountain, waving our palms as we went "Marching in the Light of God."

Together we remembered Jesus' ride into Jerusalem on a donkey, and how the same crowd that praised him that day later shouted "Crucify him!"

Maundy Thursday

In commemoration of the Last Supper, we practiced foot washing as part of our liturgy on the Common. We were invited through this practice to encounter ourselves and one another as Jesus sees us - as wholly beloved children of God, in need of God's healing yet worthy of receiving God's love and sharing it with others.

Pastor Sara Garrard (Old West UMC), Rev. Rob Mark (Church of the Covenant), Rev. Pam Werntz (Emmanuel Episcopal Church), and our own Amanda Grant-Rose led the ecumenical Maundy Thursday service at Emmanuel (photo credit Pastor Sara)

On Thursday evening, Rev. Laura led a Maundy Thursday service for the Barbara McInnis House community - while Amanda participated in a service at Emmanuel Church that included members and leaders of four Boston congregations.

Good Friday

On Good Friday we remembered the story of Jesus' arrest and crucifixion. We tried to stay awake to Jesus' suffering, to the world's suffering, and to our own suffering. We were honest about our burdens and the crap and ugliness of the world.

Together, we carried the cross from Emmanuel Church across the Public Garden and the Common to Brewer Fountain, pausing along the way to sing, read Scripture, and reflect. And then, at the foot of the cross, we burned our sins and gave them to God.

Easter Sunday

Allan, Ric, Ken and Sarah in celebration

Alleluia! Christ is risen!

On Easter, we leapt with joy and sang and shared lots of chocolate and bubbles and colorful streamers and Easter eggs...and many testimonies of how we, like Mary Magdalene, have seen the Lord!

Thank you to all who came out to the Common for this special day -- also our official founding as a church 22 years ago! -- especially to Faith Lutheran Church in Cambridge for hosting our Easter meal and joining us for worship.

And About Easter Eggs

Special thanks to friends at the BostonWarm day center and at common art for creating dozens of colorful Easter eggs to share on the Common on Easter Sunday! Friends include (left to right) Rev. Mary, Mark, Dawn and Michael.
KITCHEN HELP IS WELCOME!

Calling all chefs (sous chefs and dishwashers too!)

Do you love to cook? Are you happy to create your own thing or to follow a simple recipe provided to you together with all the ingredients? Are you interested in helping create and serve a nourishing meal for a hundred or so of your fellow citizens?

We are looking for more kitchen help at Emmanuel Church for our BostonWarm day center on Mondays and Fridays - and for our  common art  program on Wednesdays.

On site training and support will be cheerfully provided!
