President's Place
by Stacey Brewer, CAP-OM
We're "Making the Leap to Remarkable" in 2012. Coincidentally, 2012 is a "leap" year!
What will you do this year to make yourself more remarkable and truly create a memorable year?
Once, there were three mischievous little boys who lived near an old wise man. One day they devised a plot to trick the old wise man. They caught a small bird and decided they would approach him while holding the bird in their hands behind their back and ask him if it was alive or dead. If the wise man said it was dead, they would release the bird and show him it was alive. If the wise man said it was alive, they would quickly crush the bird and show him it was dead.
When the appointed time came, they approached the old wise man and nervously asked him if the bird was dead or alive. The old wise man simply replied, "It's in your hands."
Today, your future and the legacy you will leave are simply "in your hands." What you will do with the talents you've been given is up to you. Create a plan, stick to it, and let IAAP help you as we all remain on the journey to remarkable. |

First Impressions
by Brenda Fischer, CAP-OM

I have been fortunate in my "many" years in the administrative support world. During the past years, I have been like all of you, "looking for a job." There were times when I changed my mind about positions, when I had to "hang" in there, when I had to prove myself and when training paid off. However, getting the job is the first thing. I would like to share with you three situations that were responsible for the development of my personal professional development/employment theory.
My first real job was when my husband went to Vietnam (when I was a baby). I was fortunate enough to attend a high school that had a terrific "secretarial" program. As a result of this opportunity, I felt I had very good skills. These skills led to me being hired for a good job at a publishing house in Chicago. After spending a day in "downtown" Chicago, I decided the job would be great, but I just did not want to deal with the work environment. I declined the job in favor of working close to home.

5 Tools of Leadership Excellence
by Dr. Daniel Crosby, IncBlot
Leadership theory of some sort or another is ancient; as long as there have been people there have been leaders and ideas about what made them exceptional.
However, it is only recently that we have begun to examine leadership, and leadership excellence, in a systematic and scientific way.

Catie Wells
Executive Assistant
Huntsville/Madison Co.
Convention & Visitors Bureau
Catie Wells joined the CVB team in September of 2010, replacing a retiring Executive Assistant after 26 years of service. Her job description is quite multi-faceted and encompasses human resources, proofreading and editing, accounting and event planning in addition to general administrative responsibilities. Catie's previous work experience includes teaching high school Spanish in Macon, Georgia, teaching English as a foreign language (and practicing conversational Spanish) in Mexico, and working in the hospitality industry as the Reservations Supervisor at Miraval Resort - one of Oprah's favorite places - in Tucson, Arizona. She is pleased to be back home in north Alabama after being away for several years.
Catie dedicates most of her non-working hours towards pursuing her passion for the performing arts. She has studied classical ballet for most of her life and continues to take adult ballet classes with Huntsville Ballet. Perhaps you saw her in the most recent production of Nutcracker, in Theatre Huntsville's Little Women last spring or at the Cemetery Stroll last fall as Tallulah Bankhead visiting her mother's grave. In addition to ballet and theatre performances, Catie also plays the harp.
