Minor League Hockey Makes a Power Play with Better Video

The entrance of a Zamboni hardly goes unnoticed at any hockey game, but the level of ice-clearing spectacle is definitely major-league at the home of the ECHL's Adirondack Thunder. This month, installation begins on what is likely the first 5-mm-pixel-pitch video display in the ECHL, and the Zamboni entrance will be crowned by a mega display that is second only in size to the new four-sided center-hung scoreboard setup.

Glens Falls Civic Center, shown in a rendering, gets a 5-mm-pixel pitch video display in a recent upgrade.

Dismal Winter Produces Nifty New Venue in Northeastern N.Y.

NORTH CREEK, N.Y. - Last winter was, one fears, a taste of what we will see more of as the planet warms: record global temperatures translated into an eastern season where brown was the dominant color. The parking lots at Breadloaf, Craftsbury and the few other venues capable of making snow filled with cars from around the region, and diehards got used to skiing the same few kilometers.

Radium Girls now filming in Warren County

The movie Radium Girls is currently being filmed in the region. Based on a true story set in the 1920's, the story is about women who worked in a factory in New Jersey that were gradually poisoned by radium based paint used on clock and watch face products. Set locations in Lake George and Salem as well as site locations in the City of Glens Falls featuring older mill type factory, riverside shots and more have been used in the film. Filming is expected to be wrapped up by early November. EDC worked with the film's producers for over a year to assist the project and continues to develop plans to establish a film commission for the region. Local talent, services and use of regional providers were a big part of the production. EDC is a strong advocate for the expansion of the all important film tax credit in the Glens Falls-Warren county region. The film tax credit is critical to make movies of all levels more viable economically and could be a major factor in bringing more productions to the area in the future.

Derailed Film

Article on film currently being shot in the Albany/Troy area called "Derailed" highlights two reasons there is new interest in filming in the Capital Region- great locations, architecture, landscapes and film tax credit that lowers overall production costs. EDC Note: One scene in the movie was filmed lakeside at a Lake George Village park in mid October.

Dr. John Kelly of IBM and a part time Lake George resident was featured in a recent interview with Charlie Rose on 60 Minutes re Artificial Intelligence using Watson. At past EDC keynote presentations first in Fall 2008 and again at EDC's Annual Luncheon in May, 2012 Dr. Kelly spoke about this emerging cognitive computing technology and its possible long range impacts. Driverless Trucks Are Going To Change the Industrial Landscape

Uber recently made headlines testing its self-driving cars in Pittsburgh and Google has been working on its own for years, but something you don't hear a lot about is self-driving trucks-and that's likely to change. Many of America's largest companies realize the benefits promised by driverless trucks and experts are already saying municipalities, developers and investors alike need to start considering the impact they will have on commercial real estate.
