FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL:
Mrs. Crisci, Principal

Dear Parents,

I have a few notes for this week's message:

Play Like a Champion Today:
We apologize that we needed to cancel our Play Like a Champion Parent Program on Sunday.  Our presenter was on her way through Pennsylvania and had to turn around due to the several road closures.  We are disappointed that we needed to cancel, but we will be looking for a date to reschedule.   Play Like a Champion Today is the world's only university-based (not-for-profit) initiative focused on promoting a positive sports culture for all young people.  The goal of the program is to develop ethically responsible sports leaders and to promote character development through sports.  At the high school level, we know that athletics is a critical part of the educational experience.  The lessons that athletes learn on the field take them far beyond their high school years.  The elements of Play Like a Champion are for coaches, players, and parents.  We hope that you will join us in our mission of implementing this important program at CCHS.  Keep an eye on this newsletter for more information.

Registration for the 2015-2016 School Year:
As a reminder from last week, we are quickly approaching registration for the 2015-2016 school year.  During the first week of February, students will have class activity period assemblies to go over the registration process and hear about electives offered to their class.  Student will choose courses and return all of their registration paperwork on February 20.  At this time, students are also required to submit a $300 registration fee.  Please begin to plan now and speak to your students about the coming school year.  Registration paperwork will be given to students and posted on Edline during the first week of February.

Grading and Second Semester:

The second semester officially starts on Wednesday. (There are no classes on Tuesday due to make-up exams.)  Teachers will complete first semester grades this week and transcripts will be posted to Edline.  It is critical that you review your child's grades.  You will see the following:  first quarter, second quarter, midterm exam and first semester. For semester courses, you will also see a final grade.  The first semester grade is very important in calculating the student's final average in a course.  Please speak to your students about the work that they did during the first semester and what needs to be done during this semester to achieve success.  By continuing the conversation at home, you are reinforcing what we do at school each day.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

JOIN IN SUPPORT OF ESEA
(Elementary and Secondary School Act)

Click here to join the subscription list (click "Subscribe to our mailing list" on the right side of the page) for "CQ Engage" to be updated on important updates and advocacy opportunities for ESEA.

The start of the 114th Congress in January offers a new and promising opportunity to get ESEA improved and reauthorized. The House and Senate are both expected to reintroduce bills to reauthorize ESEA as early as late January and early February. We will be working with our other partners to ensure that the proposed bills include provisions which improve equitable participation, including technical fixes for the issue of "set asides" being taken off the top prior to calculation of our equitable participation

As part of our advocacy in support of ESEA Reauthorization, we propose two rounds of Hill visits. These visits will be coordinated with National Catholic School's week and will involve Congressional meetings on Thursday, January 29, 2015 and will follow the Congressional School Choice Caucus event scheduled for Wednesday, January 28th.  Round 2 of Congressional visits will take place on Thursday, February 12, 2015, and will involve Superintendents, Government Programs Directors and Directors and Education contacts at State Catholic Conferences from key Congressional districts which have a high concentration of Title I services and where set asides have the most significant impact.

As you know, any good advocacy requires a collective and coordinated response from the national and local Catholic education community. We would like to coordinate both rounds of Hill visits with support at the local level in the form of letters from schools, board members and parents.

Thank you for your support!

PARENT'S ASSOCIATION

"IRISH EXTRAVAGANZA" UPDATE

Thanks to those who have offered to assist with the "Irish Extravaganza" on February 28th. This event has been coined the "Ceilidh" (or, "Party" in Gaelic).

The committee will meet every Tuesday at 7 p.m. to continue planning for this major event. ALL ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE ON THE PLANNING COMMITTEE!

This pre-St. Patrick's Day event will be a fun evening of celebrating our Irish Pride as we dedicate our new Dining Hall to John Pisa ('74), whose generous donation helped make the renovations possible.  Please contact us, and/or come on Tuesday if you are interested in assisting with one of the committees: entertainment, food, gift baskets, tickets, decorating ... We need your ideas, your connections, and your enthusiasm to make this event a success! Questions? Contact Sharon McHugh: [email protected]
ACTION ALERT

Issue:      The ceiling for nonpublic school transportation, currently at $884.00 per pupil, has not been increased since the 2008-2009 school year.   As a result, nonpublic school students are losing

transportation services because of the costs incurred by districts and private contractors.

Action:     Please call, email, or write Governor Christie on a continuing basis between now and the release of his Budget in February to ask for this increase.  Please keep the following points in mind:

1.   Public school students living within the designated mileage limits are never denied a ride to school of enrollment.

2.    Nonpublic school students are dependent upon the bids submitted by public school districts and private contractors which do not exceed the $884.00 per pupil limit.

3.    In contacting Governor Christie's Office, please describe in detail your own stories with respect to nonpublic school transportation.

4.    Be courteous but firm in your request for this most important health and safety issue.

5.    A question and answer document is included with the Alert. Please feel free to use it as needed.
