IRISH GIVING DAY MAKES HISTORY!

Thank you to all who supported our first-ever one-day giving event on St. Patrick's Day. The event raised more than $63,000 in 24-hours, an historic achievement for CCHS due to the generosity of so many. We thank the students and parents who donated and helped spread the word, especially those who helped organize the Lip Sync Battle which benefited the Irish Giving Day. THANK YOU!

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL:

Dear Parents:
Mrs. Heather Crisci
Mrs. Heather Crisci, Principal

It is hard to believe that this week marks the end of the third academic quarter.  Our students are a group of hard workers.  Please encourage them to continue their hard work through the end of the year.

Our senior class will be leaving for their class trip to Florida this week.  Please keep them in your prayers as we wish them safe travels and a fun time.

Finally, I would ask that you pay attention and take time to read the two action alerts in today's newsletter.  When we send these alerts home, it is critical that we respond so our state government hears what we need and want in our Catholic schools.  I thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Heather Crisci
Principal

Attention Sophomore Parents - It's Time to Consider Ordering a Class Ring:  Eaton Goldthwaite, our representative from Herff Jones, will meet with the sophomores on Monday, March 23 to discuss the ring ordering process.  Then, he will return to school on Monday, March 30 and Tuesday, March 31 during the lunch periods to take ring orders.  Any parent that would like to meet with Eaton prior to placing the ring order may do so on Tuesday, March 31 from 5:00 to 7:15 pm in the dining hall.  Please make sure your son/daughter is present so Eaton can ensure the proper size for the ring.

Graduation Reminder to Senior Parents:  Requests for Graduation seating, special guest invitations, and special seating requests for handicapped or limited mobility guests are due to the Student Affairs Office by March 25.

Reminders for Seniors:  All seniors attending the Florida trip must bring their luggage to school on Monday.  The seniors will depart for the Florida trip early on Thursday morning.  If you have any last minute questions, please email or call Mr. Lewis.  The seniors will return from Florida on March 30 and have been granted the senior privilege of having no school on March 31.  Only seniors who have not already attended a retreat are required to be in school on April 1.

The fourth quarter officially begins on March 30; therefore, the senior attendance policy will be in effect on April 1 for any senior attending the retreat.  Moving forward, any time missed due to unexcused lateness, absence, suspension, or early dismissals must be made up prior to graduation practice on June 3.

April 1 Retreat Reminder:  All students who have not attended a previous retreat are expected to be in school for retreat on April 1.  April 1 is a full day of school with dismissal at 2:37 pm.

Summer Uniform:  Summer uniform goes into effect on April 1.  The girls will continue to wear their tights since their kilts are still too short.  We will continue to address this problem and if a class begins to wear their kilts at the required length, then we will consider allowing them to wear the ankle socks.

Please note that for the 2015-2016 school year, all female students, freshman thru senior, will be required to wear the white CC ankle socks that are available for sale in the school store.  These socks will only be worn with the summer uniform.

Early Dismissals:  This is a reminder that students are permitted 5 unexcused early dismissals per school year.  I am preparing letters for students that currently have 4 or 5 unexcused early dismissals.  If your child receives a letter, please review the dates and if you have or can get documentation that will excuse the early dismissal please have your child bring it to 114 as soon as possible so we can update our records.  There are times that students leave early for a doctor's appointment but forget to bring back the note stating they were seen in the office.  Please sign the letter and return it to 114 by the date requested.

ACTION ALERT

ISSUE: Governor Christie proposed $2M in the Fiscal Year 2016 Education Budget for the Opportunity Scholarship Demonstration Program.  The program is identical to the one that was removed from his FY '14 Budget by Democratic leaders in the Legislature.

OUR POSITION: The New Jersey Catholic Conference and the New Jersey Network of Catholic School Families supports this Demonstration Program to provide opportunities for children, who would normally be trapped in failing public schools, in order for them to attend a nonpublic school of their choice.

ACTION:

1. Call, email, or visit with the offices of the members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Assembly Budget Committee asking them to retain this program in the Budget (See attached list).  Remind them that promises have been made to help these students in failing schools, and this program offers one of many potential solutions.  Emphasize to them that the solutions to failing schools come from a variety of sources, with this program being one of many possible remedies.

2. Send an email, letter, or phone call to Governor Christie's office thanking him for including this program in his Education Budget.  However, in your contact with his office, ask that he make every effort during any Budget negotiations, to retain this program because of its critical importance to school choice in New Jersey.

3. If your State Senator and/or your members of the General Assembly are not on either Budget Committee, call, email, or visit those legislators and ask that they urge their colleagues on the Budget Committees to retain this program in the Budget.

4. This is an ongoing Alert between now and June and we ask that you repeat it periodically to emphasize its importance, in order to keep your request at the forefront of Budget considerations by State legislators.

ACTION ALERT

ISSUE: Even though Governor Christie's Budget contains an additional $750,000 for nonpublic school nursing services, the amount is still $1,409,000 short of what was available in the Appropriations Act last year.  That final figure of $14,311,000 was created by the Legislature after much work by the nonpublic school community.  Furthermore, Governor Christie's Budget eliminated the $2,441,000 that was added to the Nonpublic School Technology, thus reducing the amount to $3 million.

OUR POSITION: The New Jersey Catholic Conference and the New Jersey Network of Catholic School Families has continued to support increased funding in nonpublic school accounts.  Our focus with the Legislature, particularly the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Assembly Budget Committee, will be to increase the funding for nonpublic school nursing services and technology aid at least to the amount in the Appropriations Act from last year.

ACTION:

1.      Call, email or speak directly with the offices of the members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Assembly Budget Committee asking them to restore the level of funding in the nonpublic school nursing services and nonpublic school technology accounts at least to the level of funding in the Fiscal Year 2015 Appropriations Act.  See attached List.

2.      Give special thanks to Assemblyman Gary Schaer who is chair of the Assembly Budget Committee for his work during last year's Budget process and his willingness to increase last year's amounts in nonpublic nursing services and nonpublic technology.

3.      If your State Senator and/or your members of the General Assembly are not on either Committee, call, email, or visit those legislators and indicate the need for this appropriation to nonpublic school students and their parents.  Remind them of the tax dollars being saved to public schools in their districts by the decision of nonpublic school parents to send their children to a nonpublic school

4.      Repeat steps 1 and 3 periodically between now and the third week in June in order to keep your request at the forefront of Budget considerations by State legislators.

5.      Have students write letters to their respective legislators noting how the funding for nursing and nonpublic technology funding was used this year and how the loss will affect those programs next year.
