The June 2016 AFSI Chizuk Mission Continues!
Day 2
The group started the morning with a visit to Akko, that beautiful and historic city on the Mediterranean that houses the infamous Akko prison where many Jewish heroes were hung by the British during the battle for Palestine. AFSI's guiding light, Ze'ev Jabotinsky, also was imprisoned there. In Akko they met Aharon Pulver, head of the Israel Independence Fund, who accompanied the group on a tour of the underground city of Akko, with a special guide.

The group then moved on to Beit Lohamai Haghetaot, The Ghetto Fighters' House Museum, located on the Coastal Highway (Route #4) between Akko and Nahariya.
This is a fascinating museum, being established in April 1949 on a hill overlooking the Akko valley using old buildings of the British Army. Among the founders, all of whom were Holocaust survivors, were the last remaining survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto Revolt, partisans, prisoners of concentration camps, those who went into hiding using a false identity and those who escaped to the USSR.
The last stop of the day was at Rosh Hanikra, "where the sea meets the cliffs", home of beautiful grottoes and the world-famous cable car. A little-known fact, this cable car is the steepest in the world.
Rosh Hanikra is also the meeting point of the Israel and Lebanese border, where one can see the tunnel dug here in 1943 to extend the Cairo-Haifa rail line to Beirut.

Back at Kibbutz Lavi, the group met with Golan Schwartz, Director of External Relations for Yeshivat HaGolan, the Hesder Yeshiva on the Golan Heights. Golan lives in Hispin, very close to the Syrian border, and described what life is like for him, his family and neighbors in this very tense area.
