 The Doctor's Note

Dear Keller High School Families,

Wow! It is unbelievable that we are ending the first quarter of our school year. There have already been many memorable moments - Homecoming 2017, monthly Coffee Chats with KHS Administration, our district champion tennis team, and the most recent PSAT test. Our commitment at Keller HS is to develop students, both in mind and character, preparing them for future success by instilling high academic and ethical standards. Keller High School is destined for amazing things in 2017-18.

There are a couple of district conversations that are quickly approaching that may interest you. First, the Keller Independent School District is crafting a vision for its future, and we want your input to help drive that process. Keller ISD has initiated a visioning process that will be built on the community's input, as the District actively listens to the ways in which the community wants to frame the future of education in our community. This process will consist of public forums, one-on-one interviews with stakeholders, a district-wide visioning questionnaire, and various workshops. By May 2018, the District hopes to have a defined set of core strategies in place that the KISD Board of Trustees can consider for approval.

The first opportunity to get involved will be at a series of Education Summits in October. Each Summit will take place at a different high school, but anyone is welcome to attend any of the events:
  • 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 9, 2017 | Fossil Ridge HS Cafeteria
  • 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 10, 2017 | Timber Creek HS Cafeteria
  • 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 16, 2017 | Central HS Cafeteria
  • 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2017 | Keller HS Cafeteria

We hope you will plan to attend one of these events to learn more about the District's Visioning process and to provide your feedback. For those who are interested in getting even more involved in the visioning process, please click this link  and provide your contact information. You may be selected to participate in additional phases of the visioning process. To learn more please  visit https://www.kellerisd.net/visioning .

Next, Keller ISD and the KISD R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out with Character and Kindness) anti-bullying campaign will host a Bullying Prevention Summit on Saturday, October 21, 2017 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. It will be held at the Keller Center for Advanced Learning (201 Bursey Road, Keller, 76248). Richard Guerry, Founder of the Institute for Responsible Online & Cell Phone Communication, will be the featured speaker at this year's event. Attendees will gain knowledge to promote responsible use of digital tools while also obtaining the wisdom to prevent negative, irresponsible, and malicious digital behaviors and trends. Please click this link for more information.

Finally, we want to share our appreciation for the continued partnership that we have with our families. We look forward to another exciting and successful school year. Please stay involved, and call on your student's teacher, counselor, or administrator for any assistance you may need during the 2017-18 school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael Nasra

Melanie Rhodes
Keller High School is home to many outstanding people: students and teachers, new and returning, and each has a unique story. In particular, with an incredible story that especially stands out, is Melanie Rhodes, a new teacher at Keller High School this year. Rhodes was born in a poverty stricken town in the Philippines that to this day, according to her husband Michael Rhodes, does not have running water or electric in most homes. Rhodes worked diligently as a maid to pursue her education and remained positive. She worked through college as a live-in nanny for four children; she managed their bills and meals in addition to attending night classes. She received her Bachelor's degree in English and graduated Texas A&M with her Master's Degree. On the same day she graduated from Texas A&M she also received her United States citizenship... Laura Davis
Laura Davis is entering her fourth year teaching at Keller High School. Throughout her time here, she's taught English for freshmen, juniors, and seniors, become an NHS adviser, taken on the role of leading Spear-It Crew, and earned a reputation for her love of all things nerdy. Her classroom itself is covered in posters of her favorite shows, books, movies, and everything in between. Before I sat down to talk with Ms. Davis, I thought the posters were just that: posters, simple statements to express the things she loves...  Click to read more.
