Talking about vaccines

The Virtual Training Academy (VTA+), a project of the IGHS's Pandemic Initiative for Equity and Action (UPIEA) recently launched a COVID-19 vaccine communications training module. The goal of this training is to prepare local health department staff to effectively communicate about COVID-19 vaccines to members of the public during telephone interviews. VTA+ has already trained more than 1,000 learners.
UPIEA and its partners recently secured additional funding to continue the online COVID-19 case and contact tracing workforce development program through 2023 and funding from SFDPH to continue to provide technical and operational support as needed through 2021.
UPIEA is also busy completing work on two innovative grants with Genentech – one is a case-control study assessing COVID risk in San Francisco and the other is a study testing out the use of a virtual reality intervention to reduce implicit bias in patient care at UCSF.

The capstone research project is the centerpiece of the Master of Science program. Students focus on a particular area of interest and apply what they have learned in the classroom to an active, mentored project in global health, either in the United States with an underserved population or with an international partner.
This year’s class of Master of Science in Global Health will present their capstone research virtually on July 26 and 27.
In the fall, IGHS will welcome roughly 35 new MS students and five new PhD students.

Ingrid Chen, PhD, MS ('13)
Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Associate Director of Eradication Research, IGHS Malaria Elimination Initiative
Ingrid Chen is researching the effectiveness of spatial mosquito repellents, a new product class that creates a small area free from biting mosquitos. Spatial repellents can reduce outdoor malaria transmission, which remains a major challenge in many countries in Southeast Asia and in sub-Saharan Africa attempting to eliminate the disease. Dr. Chen is working on a meta-analysis to consolidate the evidence base on spatial repellent studies and on user acceptability studies in Cambodia, Indonesia and Zambia.

Elizabeth Buttrick, MPH, MSW
Senior Program Manager, Maternal and Newborn Child Health and UPEIA
Elizabeth is currently writing up manuscripts to disseminate the work of the East Africa Preterm Birth initiative and developing proposals for new projects for MNCH. With UPIEA, she works on the local COVID response, serving as the current UCSF point person in support of SFDPH Case Investigation, Contact Tracing and Isolation and Quarantine Support.

Rachel King, PhD
Assistant Professor, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, IGHS Faculty Affiliate
Dr. King's research seeks to understand the vulnerabilities of young women who sell sex for money or commodities. She recently concluded a study that aimed at developing and testing a feasible and culturally acceptable prevention intervention to increase uptake and adherence to PrEP HIV prevention drugs and HIV self-testing among young women at high risk. She is also planning to study the impact of COVID and associated public health restrictions on the emotional, financial wellbeing of vulnerable populations.

Global Action in Nursing (GAIN) is a women-led organization of global health experts focused on a three-part solution to decrease maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in Liberia, Malawi and Sierra Leone: expanding the nursing workforce, establishing a pathway for nurses to upgrade their education, and creating cadres of expert providers skilled in patient care and leadership.

The field of global health evolved with a colonial – racist and anti-poor – worldview at its core. In recent years, calls to eliminate the residual power dynamics from the field have grown louder. The UCSF Decolonizing Global Health Working Group organized a series of seminars featuring thought leaders in this area to foster conversation on how we can reimagine research, education and practice to improve global health through equity and reciprocity. Upcoming speakers include Professor Address Malata (pictured at right), Dr. Seye Abimbola and Dr. Cristian Montenegro Cortés.
