President's Message
Stanley Hefner, LUTCF
NAIFA-West Virginia President
Hello everyone.
Has anyone noticed that our locals have been disappearing? We are down to 4 active survivors. Charleston, Bluestone Highlands, Ohio Valley and Tygarts Valley. With the exception of Charleston the other survivors may not have enough members to fill all the offices needed. Many of our membership I would say belong to the NAIFA-WV At Large local that does not conduct meetings or have officers.
Guess this is just a sign of the times. It used to be important years ago for agents to have the fellowship and camaraderie even with agents of other companies but now the newer generations are just not that interested. Just 25 years ago I was President of the Parkersburg local and we had close to 100 members. Less than 20 years later I signed the paperwork to dissolve the local.
It would seem that change is inevitable and the age of the locals associations are over. Guess that's OK as long as we have a healthy substitute and it would seem that a state association is where we are headed. Attending meetings would be more difficult but if everyone attended maybe quarterly or semiannually then that would be more participation than we have now.
I live in Parkersburg and belong to the Charleston Local. I make it a point to attend each month and get my CE, have lunch and listen to the speakers. It's always a great meeting and the food is fine. Maybe many of you who belong to a local that does not meet, would consider taking the time to join in 3 or 4 times a year at our meetings in Charleston and help share ideas and motivate those who have a common interest.

Irma cancels NAIFA's P+P Conference, but look for highlights of what could have been, on NAIFA.org
Dear NAIFA Members,
I had hoped and expected to be in Orlando meeting with many of you at
NAIFA's 2017 Performance + Purpose conference. As you know, Hurricane Irma forced us to cancel the event, and we now turn our attention to those who have or will be impacted by Irma and by Hurricane Harvey.
Many members of our NAIFA family live and work in the paths of these devastating storms, and I would like to urge you to contribute to the NAIFA Hurricane Relief Fund. The fund will help your colleagues, fellow insurance and financial advisors, who suffered hurricane-related losses. More information on the fund and how to donate is available
HERE.
I know many of you are disappointed, as am I, that we were unable to get together this year for P+P. NAIFA volunteers and staff had planned an excellent program. While it's impossible for us to recreate the P+P experience online, we would like to give you a small taste of what we had in store. Keep an eye out next week for an email announcing Performance + Purpose Virtual: an online sampling of P+P content. For more information, please
watch this short video by NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux.
Best regards,
Keith Gillies, CFP, CLU, ChFC
2017 Performance + Purpose Conference Chair
NAIFA President, 2017-2018

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
NAIFA, Industry Respond To Republican Tax Framework
The White House and Republican leaders in Congress released their "
Unified Framework for Fixing Our Broken Tax Code" proposal for comprehensive tax reform. The nine-page document does not include full legislative details, but establishes principles for the tax writing committees to follow to cut tax rates for individuals and businesses with an "aim to maintain or raise retirement plan participation of workers and the resources available for retirement."
The Save Our Savings coalition, of which NAIFA is a member,
issued a response
praising the framework's sentiment in favor of protecting retirement savings. "The Coalition, representing millions of American consumers, families and retirees, was heartened to see that the tax reform proposal did not include misguided policies to reduce savings incentives and tax retirement accounts," the release said.
However, coalition members remain concerned about proposals by some members of Congress advocating the "Rothification" of retirement accounts, whereby the government would require the immediate taxation of retirement contributions rather than allowing some accounts to be tax-deferred.
"Insurance and financial advisors know better than most the importance of the tax code in promoting retirement savings and preparedness among American workers," said NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux. "The acknowledgment by the administration and Republican leadership that reform should protect retirement savings and encourage workers to prepare is positive news for advisors and, particularly, for the American public they serve.
"We agree with our coalition partners that retirement savers and employers benefit from having access to plans that incentivize savings. Plan designs that make it easier for participants to prepare for retirement, including ROTH and tax-deferred options, will help retirees achieve their retirement goals.
"We look forward to reviewing the details when legislative language becomes available, and will work with the administration and members of Congress to ensure that specific measures will have the best possible benefit for advisors, their clients, and the nation as a whole."

NAIFA Diversity Task Force Emphasizes Diversity & Inclusion
NAIFA members are our most valuable assets. The collective sum of the individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, inventiveness, innovation, self-expression, unique capabilities and talent that our members possess and invest in their work represents a significant part of not only NAIFA's culture, but our reputation as an organization.
NAIFA embraces and encourages our members' differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status and other characteristics that make our members unique.
NAIFA 20/20 Strategic Plan
Advancing diversity and inclusion in the insurance and financial services industry is at the forefront of NAIFA's vision for the future, and a key component of the NAIFA 20/20 Strategic Plan. The Diversity and Inclusion initiative supports NAIFA 20/20's goal to empower members by broadening diversity, bolstering advocacy, developing top-notch training programs and increasing public awareness.
As an organization, NAIFA seeks to create a more diverse population of agents who are better equipped to serve a diverse population. Inclusion enhances an organization's ability to achieve better business results by engaging people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. That is the overall goal of the Diversity Task Force. MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
The 2018 Congressional Conference is scheduled for May 22-23, 2018!
In the past four years, over three thousand NAIFA members from every corner of the country came to Washington, DC and visited Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers and advise them on how their decisions affect agents, brokers, and their clients.
NAIFA held its 2016 Congressional Conference to establish and cultivate relationships with lawmakers, to share the expertise of NAIFA members from all 50 states, and educate them on the value that NAIFA members bring to their clients and the solutions they provide for 75 million American families.

NAIFA's Mission Aided with IFAPAC and APIC
The core mission of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors is advocacy. There is a common misconception that NAIFA membership dues include all the dollars needed to fund our national and state advocacy efforts. The fact is that NAIFA spends over 25% of its 12 million dollar annual budget to pay for lobbyists and programs to support our advocacy efforts. However, additional funds are needed to help gain access to our elected representatives. The source of these funds are from the Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Action Committee (IFAPAC).
IFAPAC's goal is to help the associations advance the legislative and regulatory interests of the members of NAIFA. While any U.S. citizen can contribute to IFAPAC, only members of NAIFA may be solicited to do so. Contributions must be voluntary. Contributions are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes. Of approximately 4,600 political action committees registered with the Federal Election Commission, IFAPAC ranks in the top tier. IFAPAC is the largest insurance PAC in the country. In the last election cycle, the national IFAPAC contributed approximately $1.8 million to federal candidates and committees.
Insurance and Financial Advisors Political Involvement Committee (IFAPIC)
Our business is based on building relationships. The world of politics is no different. One of NAIFA's greatest strengths is that we have membership representation in each Congressional District in the country.
It is vitally important that we know which of our members know elected officials and how well they know them. Please click on the link below and complete the legislative contact form:
