Students Forgo Traditional Summer Jobs for Entrepreneurship
Eighteen Windsor-Essex students are joining hundreds of others across the province as first-time entrepreneurs in the annual Summer Company program.

Summer Company is an Ontario government program which provides young people with the resources and training to start a new summer business. Full-time students, aged 15-29, receive hands-on business training, advice, and mentorship, from local business leaders, as well as a grant of $3,000.

Since 2001, over 7,800 students in Ontario have launched businesses through Summer Company. Approximately 500 people will be enrolled this summer.

The WindsorEssex Small Business Centre is working with a variety of new student businesses that provide services and products, such as videography, fashion, landscaping, boat cleaning, audio recording, tutoring, 3D printing, and property management.

Despite Challenges, Syrian Refugee Opens Windsor Restaurant

Mohammad Basem Aldehneh was an engineer for 17 years before seeking refuge in Canada.
 
Mohammad Basem Aldehneh never thought he'd be the owner of a restaurant - it just wasn't part of his plan.

The Syrian refugee, now living in Windsor, was an engineer for 17 years before arriving in Canada more than a year ago.

"We can't go back to Syria ... there's a war going on," he said. "So, we decided to come to a safe place with my family, so we can live in a safe area. Canada is the best place for that."

A good business plan is your road map to success!  A business plan is also required when applying for any type of small business financing.  Attend one of these FREE seminars to learn how to develop a business plan that will work for you!  This session will cover:
  • Required elements of a business plan
  • Breaking down a business plan into manageable pieces
  • Where to gather relevant information for a business plan
  • How to professionally arrange your ideas and research
  • What to do with the plan when it's completed



 

Starter Company
Workshop

This Government of Ontario program provides entrepreneurs with the resources and knowledge needed in order to start and grow their own small business. The program includes one-on-one guidance from the Small Business Centre, mentoring with local professionals, funding of up to $5,000, and access to small business training & workshops.

When entrepreneurs start their small businesses, there are plenty of steps and factors that are necessary for things to go right - and sometimes an entrepreneur may not notice those steps or factors until they happen, or until something doesn't quite work out. There's also the concern of how much money to charge for services or products in order to make money and be a profitable and sustainable business. A considerable factor in determining business success or failure is how well a business's finances are understood.

It's Canada's 150th Birthday and there couldn't be a better time to recognize and celebrate Canadian Entrepreneurs over the age of 50!

The newest and fastest growing segment of entrepreneurship is led by people over the age of 50. It's time to recognize their accomplishments and let all of Canada know what they are doing and what they have to offer.

Perhaps you've got a great new idea or have found a solution to an existing problem - a business that is changing the world!

Whether you've retired and turned what you know into a business, or started that business you've always dreamed of, apply to the inaugural 50 over 50 Awards for a chance to be recognized!

A panel of judges from Canada and beyond will make the final decision on the 50 companies that will receive one of the 50 awards.

Eligibility Criteria: The awards are open to all Canadian resident entrepreneurs who have started a business after they turned 50 years old. Entrepreneurs must be majority owners of the business and the head office of the business must be located in Canada.

Submission deadline is August 31, 2017.

EPICentre seeking new Entrepreneur-in-Residence

Role Description:
As a seasoned entrepreneur/intrapreneur, board member, business leader, and investor in startup firms, the EIR brings a crucial skill set and wealth of industry knowledge to the position. In addition to providing expertise through guest lectures, workshops and coordination with EPICentre Staff and Faculty, the EIR will share insight and experience that assists young entrepreneurs to more deeply understand and implement the processes of innovation and venture building.

The EIR will:
  • Provide introductions, through various networks inside and outside of Windsor-Essex, to other successful business people who can help or advise EPICentre faculty, administrators, and youth ventures. This is a key role that will fill a current gap in mentor and investor expertise
  • Assist in the effective development of applied business/leadership skills
  • Provide advice about and connections to knowledge experts, angel investors, and venture capitalists
  • Support multidisciplinary faculty in identifying contacts and projects relating to the pursuit of applied research of interest to EPICentre's academic and business communities
  • Assist EPICentre through involvement with UWindsor alumni and current student cohorts
  • Provide mentorship and advice to startups involved in EPICentre programs, and provide monthly reports to the EPICentre Venture Start Director and Program Director
