Cool New Business Thrives in the Summer Heat

A new small business craze is popping up across Windsor-Essex farmer's markets this season. Gourmet ice pops: refreshing sweet treats that taste delicious, and are made locally with fresh produce and organic ingredients.

Along with Windsor Ice Pops and Atta-Boy Co., The Frosty Pineapple Gourmet Ice Pops is one of three local businesses of its kind to recently open. Owner Maya Fullerton conceived the idea after seeing it in other cities and figured Windsor would be a great place to introduce the frozen delight. "And really," said Fullerton, "who doesn't love a popsicle?"

Fullerton has been amazed by the rapid success of her business. "I thought it would lead to some [farmer's] market events here and there, but we've been overwhelmed with the response and really believe The Frosty Pineapple can be a known name in the ice pop business beyond just Windsor and Essex County."

The Frosty Pineapple takes ice pops to the next level using local, hand-picked organic ingredients and offering vegan friendly options, a variety of creative flavours and customizing them to any dietary need. The Walkerville business markets to individuals that want a sweet treat but are health-conscious and want to know what they are putting into their bodies. Their recipes are as naked as possible, steering clear of preservatives, fillers, dyes, and artificial sweeteners. What you see is what you get.

UWindsor Student Gets Head Start on City-Wide Compost Pickups
CBC News

'GreenerBins' allows customers to have their organic waste picked up on a weekly basis.

The provincial government wants every city and town to have green bin recycling by 2025. This means cities will have to offer organic waste collection - just like they do for bottles and cans.

For one Windsor man, seven years is too long to wait.

Dane Fader, a 21-year-old University of Windsor student, has just launched a company called GreenerBins Composting Company - offering customers weekly pickups of their organic waste.

Kingsville Mettawas Station Up for Best Veal Sandwich in Ontario
Sharon Hill | Windsor Star

Kingsville chef Anthony Del Brocco's veal sandwich called the Train Wreck is one of the top four veal sandwiches in Ontario and he'll compete to be the best Saturday.

His veal meal is a bit messy to eat in his Mettawas Station Italian Mediterranean Grill inside the historic Kingsville train station. That combo got the sandwich dubbed the Train Wreck and he's hoping his combination of local ingredients and Ontario veal can beat three other restaurants for the provincial veal victory.

"Bragging rights. I get to say I have the best veal sandwich in Ontario," Del Brocco said of what a win in the Veal Farmers of Ontario competition would mean.

Key considerations when buying an existing business
Business Development Bank of Canada

Growing your business internally can be a sluggish and high-risk strategy in a fast-moving business world. That's why many entrepreneurs choose instead to acquire an existing firm.

This strategy eliminates many of the headaches involved in  getting a start-up off the ground, such as developing products, hiring the right people and building a sound customer base. It also gives entrepreneurs a jump on the start-up phase-a time when many new businesses fail. Often, it's the only feasible way to break into a particular field, such as tourism or manufacturing, since start-up costs in these sectors can be prohibitive.
