THO express sadness at passing of Baki Ilkin, former Turkish Ambassador to the U.S.
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Baki Ilkin, who served as Turkey’s Ambassador to the U.S. from 1998 to 2001 and as Turkey’s Representative to the United Nations from 2004 to 2009. During his tenure in D.C., Amb. Ilkin called the partnership between the U.S. and Turkey an “enhanced relationship” that goes beyond security ties to include “closer political consultations on regional and global matters as well as a much deeper level of economic cooperation.”

On having the opportunity to serve as Turkey’s envoy to the U.S, Amb. Ilkin said , “I love being in Washington. When you receive such a reward, you want to live up to the expectations of your own country. So it is the greatest challenge.”

During his service as Turkey’s Representative to the UN, Amb. Ilkin presided over Turkey’s selection as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2009-2010 period, nearly 50 years after Turkey was last a member of the council.

We send our condolences to his family, friends, and the Turkish diplomatic community.
