LAST WEEK FOR APPLICATIONS
It’s the last week to apply for our Summer 2018 Research Program in Turkey !

The THO Summer Research Program in Turkey is an annual, all-expenses-paid, month-long research trip in Turkey, during which selected young researchers will participate in meetings, excursions, and fieldwork on a chosen subject.

This year’s theme is “ Refugees and Asylum-Seekers in Turkey: Challenges, Opportunities, and Approaches .”

APPLICATION DEADLINE. April 2nd, 2018 at 11:59 PM (EST)

DATES. July 18-August 15, 2018

ELIGIBILITY. The program is open to current undergraduate/graduate students or recent graduates between the ages of 21 and 30. You must also be an American citizen to apply.

Upcoming event: Joint THO-U.S. Chamber of Commerce roundtable with Mehmet Simsek

In April, THO will partner with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to organize an invitation-only roundtable in Washington, D.C. with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek.
THO hosts book launch for a new academic work on the Gulen Movement and the July 15 coup attempt

On March 22 , THO hosted a book launch and discussion for “ Turkey’s July 15th Coup: What Happened and Why ,” the first comprehensive academic work in English that critically examines the events leading up to the dramatic and tragic coup attempt of July 15, 2016, and that addresses why the coup attempt was destined to fail.

The event featured remarks from Dr. M. Hakan Yavuz , Dr. Sabine Dreher , and Mujeeb Khan on their contributions to the book.
THO teleconference addresses latest updates in Operation Olive Branch

On March 20 , THO hosted a teleconference on “ Turkey’s ‘Operation Olive Branch’: An Update on the Political and Military Situation .”
 
The teleconference featured insights from Amb. Robert Ford (former U.S. Ambassador to Syria) and Oubai Shahbandar (International Security Program Fellow at New America and Defense Analyst for TRT World).

THO’s recent outreach
THO is continuing its outreach with a variety of government and civil society representatives.

Last week, THO President Ali Cinar met with Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), and Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-MA).

Cinar also met with Dr. Zaki Lababidi , Vice President of the Syrian American Council (SAC), and with Dr. Elie Abouaoun , Director of MENA Programs at the United States Institute of Peace.
THO hosts Turkish parliamentarians in D.C.
On March 20, THO hosted Turkish parliamentarians from the Committee on Equality of Opportunity for Women and Men (known by its Turkish acronym, KEFEK). The delegation included Chairperson R. Sezer Katircioglu (AKP-Kocaeli) and members Elif Dogan Turkmen (CHP-Adana) and Ayse Sula Koseoglu (AKP-Trabzon).
