The Latino Commission on AIDS Releases "The HIV Crisis among Hispanic Men Who Have Sex with Men" Brief |

Thursday, February 25th, 2016 New York, NY - On February 25th, the Hispanic Health Network/Latino Commission on AIDS released the "The HIV Crisis Among Hispanic/Latino MSM" Brief, to bring attention to the health crisis faced by Hispanic/Latinos Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), in the United States. The Brief, authored by David Garcia Ed.D, MPH; Gabriela Betancourt, MA, MPH; Luis Scaccabarrozzi, MPH and Alberto Jacinto, brings light to many concerning statistics related to the health outcomes of Hispanic/Latino men who have sex with men and offers recommendations to address this health crisis.
While Latinos are 17% of the US population, they accounted for 24% of all HIV infections in 2014. In 2014, every 54 minutes a Latino MSM was diagnosed with HIV in the United States and US territories. More concerning, there was a 28% increase in HIV infections among Hispanic/Latino young MSM (ages 13-24) between 2010 and 2014. Issues such as homophobia, poverty, stigma, and lack of insurance coverage are contributing factors to this situation.
"The development of innovative, community driven and realistic strategies to address this health crisis is improved by better understanding the realities that contribute to high-risk sexual behaviors and increased HIV risks among both foreign-born and US born Latino/Hispanic MSM" urged Guillermo Chacon, President of the Latino Commission on AIDS & founder of the Hispanic Health Network.

La Comisión Latina Sobre el SIDA Presenta el Reporte "La Crisis Del VIH entre los Hombres Hispanos que Tienen Sexo con Hombres" |
Nueva York, NY, Jueves 25 de febrero, 2016 - El 25 de febrero, La Red Hispana de Salud/Comisión Latina sobre el SIDA dio a conocer el documento "La Crisis del VIH entre los Hombres Hispanos que tienen Sexo con otros Hombres" el cual subraya la situación enfrentada por los hombres Hispanos/Latinos que tienen sexo con otros hombres (HSH siglas en español) en los Estados Unidos. El documento, que es el resultado del trabajo de David Garcia Ed.D, MPH; Gabriela Betancourt, MA, MPH; Luis Scaccabarrozzi, MPH y Alberto Jacinto, manifiesta muchas de las preocupantes estadísticas relacionadas a la salud de los hombres Hispanos/Latinos que tienen sexo con otros hombres, y ofrece recomendaciones para tratar con esta crisis de salud.
Latinos son el 17% de la población de los Estados Unidos, y a la vez representan un 24% de todas las infecciones por VIH en el 2014. En 2014, cada 54 minutos, un Latino HSH fue diagnosticado con VIH en los Estados Unidos y sus territorios. Más preocupante es el incremento de 28% en infecciones por VIH entre los jóvenes HSH Hispanos/Latinos (entre 13 y 24 años de edad) en el periodo comprendido del 2010 al 2014. Problemas como la homofobia, la pobreza, el estigma, y la falta de cobertura médica, son factores que contribuyen al deterioro de esta situación.
"El desarrollo de estrategias que sean realistas, innovadoras y que se centren en la comunidad, puede ser mejorados si entendemos de forma adecuada las realidades que contribuyen a los comportamientos sexuales de alto riesgo y al incremento de riesgo por VIH entre los jóvenes HSH Hispanos/Latinos, tanto nacidos en los Estados Unidos, como aquellos que nacieron en otros países" fueron las palabras de Guillermo Chacon, Presidente de la Comision Latina sobre el SIDA y fundador de la Red Hispana de Salud.
