St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church of Humble Hosts Let's Move & Get Active Day

The St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church of Humble (The Luke) in support of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move Initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids ( and in partnership with Dairy Max, National Dairy Council, and the National Football League's Play 60 Program will host Let's Move & Get Active Day on Saturday, October 19, 2013 from 9:00 am - Noon at Jack Fields Elementary School located at 2505 S. Houston Avenue, Humble, TX 77396 (directly across the street from the church). This event is to promote health awareness in efforts to annihilate childhood obesity as well as ignite excitement and encourage children to become more active. This effort is a part of the church's ongoing campaign entitled "The Luke Stands," designed to target various social issues to provide education, create awareness, and promote engagement.

The goal for Let's Move and Get Active Day is to engage children and youth in interactive exercises and educate parents regarding their children's BMI.  There will be obstacle courses, group line dances, fruits, drinks, milk and dairy products from Dairy Max, and vendors who cater to children/youth by assisting them in becoming more active.  This year The Luke is proud to add a full scale health fair for children and adults to include blood pressure screening, health education & financial assistance information from Harris Health System, a blood drive conducted by Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, free flu shots from Walgreens Pharmacy.  Other vendors include the Farmers Market, My Fit Foods, Atascocita Titans, VStar Dance Camp and a Blast Fitness workout with a Zumba Instructor.

Obesity is a major contributor to many preventable diseases and is affecting our community and our nation across all races at an alarming rate, especially in our children & youth. The Luke Humble wants to be a part of the solution by helping the community.  "Our goal is to make this a family initiative to be healthier and obliterate obesity. We plan to do this through: Education, Exercise, and Eating Healthy," said Dr. Timothy W. Sloan, St. Luke's Senior Pastor.

On Jan. 8, 2010, The Luke hosted the "5K Obliterating Obesity" Walk at Atascocita High School and in dedication to the battle against Childhood Obesity, made a donation to Humble ISD Nutrition Services for their "subway line" which allowed kids to make healthy choices for lunch.
