A Message from the President & CEO

Lupus Awareness Month starts May 1st and LSI has materials to help you reach your community with lupus information!  Lupus Awareness Month is all about YOU - how do you want to reach your community about lupus?  How can LSI support your efforts?  Let us know what YOU want to do and we will do whatever we can to support you.

The lupus community is a tight knit group - with so many misconceptions about lupus, we have to be - so don't hesitate to share your ideas for a successful Lupus Awareness Month!

Our Lupus Awareness Month page has ideas and opportunities, however don't be limited.  Together we make a difference in the fight against lupus!

Our two BIG Lupus Awareness Month activities are the Northern and Southern Suburbs Illinois Lupus Walks.  Our Illinois Lupus Walks raise funds to allow LSI to provide programs and services at NO COST to the lupus community - Lupus Walks are also great awareness builders.  Every time a participant registers for a walk, sets up a personal fundraising page and sends a link to that page out to their friends and family is an awareness opportunity!

The Illinois Lupus Walks have been hosted by LSI since 2001.  Don't be confused by other walks hosted by out of state lupus organizations - funds raised through the Illinois Lupus Walks stay right here in Illinois!

This year, the LSI Junior Board is celebrating Lupus Awareness Month with a f undraiser/friendraiser at Graystone Tavern in Wrigleyville.  A portion of the food and drink tabs will be donated to LSI and 100% of the raffle tickets will be donated to LSI.  This is a great opportunity to meet others in the lupus community.  The age range is from 21-40 and the atmosphere is laid back and welcoming.

I look forward to hearing how you celebrate Lupus Awareness Month.  Don't forget to share your efforts with us!  Use hashtag #LSILupus Awareness or email with details.

Together we make a difference.

Tara Joseph - Northern Suburbs Walk Ambassador

This year, Tara Joseph, lupus advocate, will serve as Ambassador to the 10th annual Lupus Walk on May 7th, 2017.
"Tara's strength and determination make her an excellent ambassador for the Northern Suburbs Illinois Lupus Walk," says Charles Brummell, President & CEO of the Lupus Society of Illinois - the organization hosting the event and benefitting from funds raised.  "The Illinois Lupus Walks are about the lupus community coming together in strength - because when we're together we make a difference."

News You Can Use
Lupus & Chemotherapy & Cancer

Although chemotherapy drugs can be used to treat lupus and cancer, lupus is not cancer.

Chemotherapy drugs used to treat lupus are typically immunosuppressants. Lupus is an autoimmune disease which means that the immune system is overactive - and the immune system attacks healthy cells.  Immunosuppressants suppress the immune system in an effort to slow down the attack on healthy cells.

Lupus Awareness Month

Lupus Awareness Month is the time of year when the lupus community takes time to educate their families, workplaces and neighborhoods about lupus.  Education can be as modest as sending an email to your friends and family about lupus to organizing a Lupus Awareness Day at your office.  We encourage you to get creative as you raise awareness about this often misunderstood disease.

World Lupus Day
May 10, 2017

Since 2004, lupus organizations around the globe have conducted activities on May 10 to raise awareness and educate the public about the symptoms and health effects of lupus.

Together we can make lupus an international health priority and to ensure that people with lupus around the world are diagnosed and treated effectively.

If you're doing something to celebrate World Lupus Day or if you are looking to volunteer on that day, please contact

National Minority Health Month
Anyone at any age can get lupus.  However, African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian and Native American populations are more likely to develop the disease.

April is National Minority Health Month and the Office of Minority Health is hosting educational activities throughout the month. The theme for National Minority Health Month is "Bridging Health Equity Across Communities."
