A Message from the President & CEO

Lupus Awareness Month is in full swing and we can't thank all of our volunteers enough for working so hard to increase lupus awareness in their own communities.
A special "thank you" goes to our Lupus Walk Ambassadors - Tara Joseph in the Northern Suburbs and Kanefus Walker in the Southern Suburbs. Both ladies have been long time supporters of lupus and the LSI and both have bravely shared their story to shed light on this often devastating disease. You can read Tara's story here and Kanefus's story begins below.
The Northern Suburbs Lupus Walk was May 7th and the skies were blue and the participants were smiling! Over 250 people participated and we anticipate raising $50,000! Thanks to everyone who participated.
Saturday is the Southern Suburbs Lupus Walk and we hope we'll see you there. Rain or shine, the warmth of the people at this event carries the day. We have a fantastic raffle, some great new additions to the Jr. Board tent and we are expecting a wonderful turnout!
We have the Western Suburbs Lupus Walk on August 12th and the Chicago Lupus Walk on September 24th so if you haven't been able to come out in May, we hope to see you at one of the upcoming events.
It's not too late to get involved in Lupus Awareness Month! We have plenty of opportunities and ideas left to raise awareness.
The LSI Junior Board is hosting a fun-raiser on Friday in Wrigleyville. The " Let's Not Wait 108 Years to Find a Cure for Lupus" event is free, a portion of food and beverages comes back to the LSI and 100% of the raffle is donated to the LSI. If you RSVP online by 2pm tomorrow, you'll get a FREE raffle ticket. There are some really terrific prizes - including tickets to the Goodman Theatre and a Flywheel Sports package - so you definitely want to take advantage of the free raffle ticket.
Bike the Drive is on Sunday, May 28th and you can join Lupus Charity Riders for the event. There's plenty of time to share the " Lupus Fact of the Day" - which is posted daily to Facebook and Twitter or you can pull up the list here. And posting an " I fight for lupus because" unselfie to social media with #LSILupusAwareness is always available.
We hope to see you at an LSI event in the near future.
Together we make a difference.

Kanefus Walker - Southern Suburbs Lupus Walk Ambassador

This year, Kanefus Walker, lupus support group leader, will serve as Ambassador to the 9th annual Lupus Walk on May 20th, 2017.

"Kanefus's history of leadership in the lupus community and her commitment to the fight against lupus make her an excellent ambassador for the Southern Suburbs Illinois Lupus Walk," says Charles Brummell, President & CEO of the Lupus Society of Illinois - the organization hosting the event and benefitting from funds raised.  "The Illinois Lupus Walks are about the lupus community coming together in strength - because when we're together we make a difference."

Kanefus has been instrumental in the success of the Southern Suburbs Lupus walk - getting involved since her diagnosis in 2009.  "I learned about the Illinois Lupus Walk through the lupus support group I was attending and decided to join the committee," Kanefus says.

Lupus Awareness Month

Lupus Awareness Month is the time of year when the lupus community takes time to educate their families, workplaces and neighborhoods about lupus.  Education can be as modest as sending an email to your friends and family about lupus to organizing a Lupus Awareness Day at your office.  We encourage you to get creative as you raise awareness about this often misunderstood disease.
