Distinguished by its multidisciplinary dexterity, this book is a masterfully woven reinterpretation of the life, travels, and scholarship of Edward W. Blyden, arguably the most influential Black intellectual of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It traces Blyden's various moments of intellectual transformation through the multiple lenses of ethnicity, race, religion, and identity in the historical context of Atlantic exchanges, the Back-to-Africa movement, colonialism, and the global Black intellectual movement.

Improving Food Security in Africa: Pros and Cons of Tech Transfer
A Panel Discussion & Networking Event
Panel Discussion: Monday, September 9, 2019, 3:00pm at 273 Giltner Hall
Networking Reception: 4:30pm (follows the panel discussion)
This panel discussion and networking event features five food security experts --- Drs. Jeffrey Andresen, Bruno Basso, Barry Pittendrigh, David Tschirley, and Leo Zulu --- at MSU. During the panel discussion, the panelists will discuss the challenges of feeding current and future population in Africa, the state of art of agricultural technologies in improving food security, and promises and obstacles for technology transferring. The networking event follows the panel discussion. This event is free and open to the public. Snacks, food and beverage are provided. Register to avoid food waste.

Mobilizing Data in the Transformation to a Knowledge Society
Year of Global Africa Public Lecture
Radiology Building Auditorium and Atrium Monday, Sept. 16th, 2019
Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, the Vice Chancellor of University of Cape Town (UCT), will visit MSU on September 16th and 17th, 2019. Prof. Phakeng's visit will focus on research collaboration opportunities in Africa and the role of data curation and repositories therein. She will engage MSU leadership on the broader question of a coordination framework for collaborative research between scholars from MSU and UCT.
All are welcome to her broad-audience lecture open to the public, on "Mobilizing data in the Transformation to a Knowledge Society".

Books for Africa and the library at the State University of Zanzibar are teaming up to deliver a container of books (22,000 donated volumes!) to Zanzibar.
Please help build the university's collection!
Africana is a Priority but all subjects and areas welcome
But PLEASE only send quality items (and no journal runs.)
Due to warehouse limitations, donations can only be mailed from November 15-December 15.
The container will ship by the end of December. But if you are looking to reduce your own book collection, box up useful items for the SUZA library now and mail them later.

This seminar will grapple with the complexities of diversity, religion, and migration in contemporary West Africa.
As these issues attract greater attention across the globe, it is critical that American educators be able to interpret them for students eager to understand the rapid changes taking place in both the larger world and their own communities.
CAORC is pleased to be partnering with the West African Research Center (WARC) on an upcoming faculty development seminar in Senegal.
To support community colleges and minority-serving institutions, CAORC offers fully-funded overseas seminars that help faculty and administrators gain the requisite first-hand experience n
The program is only open to faculty members and administrators at U.S. community colleges or minority-serving institutions. Awarded faculty to this competitive program will receive round-trip travel, accommodation, and meals.
