Message from Head of School

Dear TMS Community,

We are off to a strong start at our wonderful new campus. Thanks to those of you who attended our Back to School Grand Opening!  We are looking forward to Fall Trips, more grade level parent potlucks, and Back to School Night.  Remember, I have an open door policy and am happy to see you.

Best wishes, Barbara

A Bird's Eye View

Yesterday, a local aerial videography company, Discoveries from Above, came to TMS. They used a small remote-controlled helicopter with a video camera to take aerial footage of our new campus! They were able to fly over students as they walked through breezeways, ran up and down the stairs to the parking lot, played basketball, and ate lunch outside.  They are going to put together what is sure to be an amazing video showcasing our lively campus and it's beautiful, natural surroundings.

To see some examples of video projects they have done for other companies, take a look at their website.  We can't wait to see the finished product!

Do you shop at Amazon.com?

Then you have the power to raise important funds for TMS with NO cost to you.

Use this Amazon link  (which is also located at the bottom of TMS' homepage) to access Amazon.com every time you shop.

Amazon's homepage will look exactly the same as it always does with your password and your settings, but there is a big difference!
Amazon will donate 4% of everything you buy to TMS.

Top 5 Reasons to start your Amazon shopping with our Amazon link:

  1. Amazon has already donated $724.33 to TMS in the past year through this program. We can beat that number with your help!
  2. If you enter Amazon through TMS' link, then Amazon will automatically donate 4% of everything you purchase to TMS with absolutely no extra work on your part.
  3. There is something for everyone at Amazon. Ask your entire family to use TMS' link-- TMS students, parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and friends. Each purchase will make a difference for TMS.
  4. Small Payments Add Up - Use TMS' Amazon link every time you shop, even for the small items.  Don't just wait for when you make a big purchase. All of the small purchases add up to lots of funding for TMS students and faculty.
  5. Avoid the crowds, do your holiday shopping through TMS' Amazon link! While TMS is grateful with the way our Amazon income is growing, it's worth noting that things really fire up during the holiday season.

Thanks for supporting TMS in a super easy but very important way!

The Public Art class is looking for shoes and pants for an art project

Hello TMS,

My name is Gabe Robinow, and I am part of the Public Art class. In this class, we have come up with many ideas about how to beautify the campus, and some of them require communal participation. This project in particular requires a lot of shoes and pants, so, throughout the next week or so, it would be very helpful if each of you could bring in a pair of denim blue jeans that you don't wear anymore, a pair of laced shoes that you don't wear anymore, or both!  There will be a collection box in the Main Office.

Thank you so much for your participation,

Gabe Robinow, TMS Senior

Freshman Parents:
The Freshman Parent potluck was Tuesday, September 17th.  Thank you to all who attended!

Sophomore Parents:  Your potluck will be Friday, October 18th, from 7:00-9:00 p.m., at the home of Auri Donicht and Marc Allen in Novato.

Junior Parents:  Your potluck will be Wednesday, October 9th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., hosted by The Bergs in Tiburon.

These potlucks are a wonderful social event and a great opportunity to get to know your peers, as well as TMS faculty and staff.  At some point in the event there will be an opportunity to sit down for an informal sharing of information and a Q & A session.

Depending on where your student's last name falls in the alphabet, you will be asked to bring either an entree dish, a hearty salad, or a dessert.  So bring your favorite "crowd-pleaser" dish, or feel free to ask for a recommendation.  Wine is always appreciated as well.

**If you have an allergy or special food sensitivity, please notify Sierra Antonio: [email protected].

Contact Sierra Antonio with any questions, requests, or RSVPs.  And remember, this event is for parents only!

Ecology class Predator/Prey Lab

Zannie's ecology class conducted a lab study about the Predator/Prey Relationship.  This relationship is an interaction between two organisms of unlike species, in which one of them acts as predator that captures and feeds on the other organism that serves as the prey.  For more information and photos, check out Zannie's Science Page!

 Picture Day!

Picture Day is Wednesday, October 2nd.  Mark your calendar, and dress to impress!

Please note: All students will need to have their individual portraits taken so that they can get a school ID card. There will also be an all-school group photo.

Go green - Bring water bottles (and utensils if you can!)

At The Marin School, we try and be as "green" as possible.  So think twice about reaching for that paper cup!  It would be great if you could bring a refillable water bottle to use and always keep it handy.

We would also strongly recommend bringing your own reusable utensils for your lunch. Even the compostable utensils provided by our lunch service leave a pretty big carbon footprint when you think about it.

That applies to you too, teachers ;)

Fall Trips are next week!

On September 26th and 27th, each grade level will take a two-day retreat with emphasis on team-building, leadership, conflict resolution, communication skills and to strengthen their sense of community. Make sure you have signed and returned the permission slip!

For more information, please contact Shirey Bukowski ([email protected]).

eScrip

Do you like to shop?  Do you buy groceries?  Then you can help TMS earn some free money!  Sign up for eScrip today, and a percentage of all your purchases from select stores will go straight to TMS. No boxtops to collect, no strings attached, and you register in just three simple steps.  Just go to www.escrip.com to sign up!  You can search for us by name under "The Marin School Parent Association."

We are also looking for two fearless and fabulous parent volunteers to help with our eScrip campaign.  It's a simple and low-key position that won't require a huge commitment of time.  For more details, contact Sierra Antonio ([email protected]).

Coming Soon from the Development Office!

At the Back to School BBQ many current TMS parents and alumni families asked how they can show their support for TMS, especially for our tremendous faculty. One way to honor the work that our faculty do each day is to donate to our Annual Fund. Our Annual Fund covers the operational needs of TMS today and every day of the 2013-2014 school year.

Are you an alumni family?
We have an exciting campaign underway to rename our new student services area The Barbara Schakel Student Center. We are in the early stages of raising funds to dedicate the heart of our new campus to our Head Emeritus Barbara Schakel, the heart and soul of The Marin School. Barbara oversaw the dramatic transition of TMS to our current college-preparatory program.

More details are coming soon about both of these exciting and important initiatives, but don't hesitate to contact the Development Office with questions. Suzanne at [email protected] or Sierra [email protected].
