What's Happening

Message from Head of School

Dear TMS Community,

Just a reminder, Back-to-School Night is Thursday, October 3rd, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.!

"If a picture is worth a thousand words, then visiting in person must equal about a million."  What better way to learn more about the world your student inhabits each day than to experience it for yourself!

Back to School Night is your opportunity to meet with TMS faculty and learn more about their teaching style and daily classroom routine. It is also your chance to ask general questions and to clarify anything you find confusing. (However, this is not a time to discuss your child's individual needs or progress).

We urge you to attend this fun and informative event!  After brief messaged from me and members of the Board of Trustees, you will be provided with a copy of your student's schedule, and will attend each class for a 10 minute session.  There will also be an opportunity to meet with your student's Faculty Advisor, as well as Gilda, Gayle and Susan.

Please note, the program will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

I hope to see you next Thursday at Back-to-School Night.

Warmly,

Barbara

Be The One: Empowering Teens to Lead

With help from TMS freshman Mairead Minihane, Beyond Differences launched a huge social media campaign to help end social isolation in schools by creating an environment of inclusiveness.

Be The One is a campaign that Beyond Differences rolled out on Monday with some help from San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, two Superintendents, the founder of Twitter and Snoop Dog (to name a few!). The Be The One message reached upwards of 26 million people!

They did this through a massive social media campaign, an incredible assembly at Aptos Middle School, an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, and the support of people across the country who believe in Beyond Differences and its mission to end social isolation in middle school.

Mairead is a member of the Teen Board for Beyond Differences. Together, the Teen Board created the slogan, wrote the content for the article, conducted interviews, and gave time, energy and heart to the campaign to bring Be The One to Bay Area schools.

Read the article in the SF Gate here.

Picture Day!
Picture Day is Wednesday, October 2nd.

TMS contracts with Mugsy Clicks School Photography.  The photo style is your "classic" school photo with a head-and-shoulders shot.  (See example at the right). Photos are taken outdoors, with nature as the background.

After the photos are processed, students will be provided with an online access code, and you will be able to select from a few different packages and poses.  We will also take an All-School photo, which will be used in the yearbook and available for purchase.  Each student will be provided with a complimentary photo ID.

Please note: All students will need to have their individual portraits taken so that they can get a school ID card. There will also be an all-school group photo.

Senior Retreat at Walker Creek - Photo Slideshow
Earlier this month, the Senior Class went on an overnight retreat at Walker Creek for team-building, class bonding, and fun!  We put together a slideshow of photos, which premiered at Morning Meeting this week.  If you have a minute, take a peek at all the fun!

Save the Date: Grandparents' & GrandFriends' Day on November 26th

Don't miss the magic that happens when grandparents and special friends spend the morning with their TMS teen in classes lead by our spectacular faculty.
Miles Watson with his grandparents Sandra and Bob Robertson at last year's Grandparents' & Grandfriends' Day
What: Grandparents' & Grandfriends' Day

When: Tuesday, November 26th from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Where: TMS Campus

Highlights: Start the day with coffee at a reception hosted by our Head of School, attend classes with your TMS teen, enjoy a special program, and finish the visit with a complimentary lunch.
Don't have a grandparent nearby to bring to TMS? Then invite an aunt, uncle, family friend, or older sibling. Every TMS student is strongly encouraged to bring a guest!

Please note: Each TMS family extends the invitation to their teen's guest of choice. TMS does not mail invitations directly to grandparents.

More fun and exciting details to follow as the date gets closer!

Zannie's Physio class gets physical

Zannie's Physiology students got quite the workout as they conducted an experiment in homeostasis.  Students measured their resting heart rate, then got their blood pumping with jumping jacks and sprints (and everyone watching out of classroom windows had fun seeing them huff and puff!).  They compared their resting heart rate to their exercising heart rate, then continued to measure their heart rate every two minutes to track how the body returns to homeostasis.

For more information about the homeostasis lab (and more pictures from the experiment), check out Zannie's Science Page!

The Public Art class is looking for shoes and pants for an art project

Hello TMS,

My name is Gabe Robinow, and I am part of the Public Art class. In this class, we have come up with many ideas about how to beautify the campus, and some of them require communal participation. This project in particular requires a lot of shoes and pants, so, throughout the next week or so, it would be very helpful if each of you could bring in a pair of denim blue jeans that you don't wear anymore, a pair of laced shoes that you don't wear anymore, or both!  There will be a collection box in the Main Office.

Thank you so much for your participation,

Gabe Robinow, TMS Senior
