Welcome to the data issue of the Illuminator!

NRMP is pleased to showcase the continued success of its matching services. The Main Residency Match ® and the Specialties Matching Service ® witnessed the largest appointment years in NRMP history, and in this issue we highlight data from each, include links to reports, and summarize Match Week coverage.

The Main Residency Match has wrapped up, but the SMS is in full swing. Be sure to check out Upcoming Dates and the SMS Program Directors' Checklist on the left.

2015 Residency Match Largest on Record

On March 20, the NRMP released the
Advance Data Tables  from the Main  
Residency Match . In the 2015 Match, 18,025 U.S. allopathic seniors and 16,880 other applicants submitted rank order lists to compete for 30,212 PGY-1 and PGY-2 positions. Among the increases from 2014:
  • 940 more registered applicants 
  • 541 more positions
  • 651 more U.S. allopathic seniors submitted rank order lists and 533 more matched to PGY-1 positions
  • 615 more first-year positions, 60% in primary care

Beyond the numbers, coverage of Match Week festivities began on Monday with applicants submitting their Match Face photos upon learning they had matched. You can view all the coverage on the NRMP's Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages.


The complete  2015 Main Residency Match Results and Data Book  will be available mid-May.
Specialties Matching Service Report for Appointment Year 2015

Results and Data: Specialties Matching Service®, 2015 Appointment Year is now available online. T he 2015 appointment year was the largest in SMS history:
  • 3,674 programs participated across 56 subspecialties and offered 8,503 fellowship positions
  • 7,469 positions (87.8%) were filled
  • 2,938 programs (80.0%) filled all positions
  • 9,538 applicants participated in at least one Fellowship Match and 7,469 (78.3%) obtained a position 
Transition to Residency: Conversations Across the Medical Education Continuum, October 1-3, 2015, Hotel Monteleone, New Orleans, LA Register Now for NRMP Transition to Residency Conference!
 
The NRMP's inaugural stakeholder conference, Transition to Residency: Conversations Across the Medical Education Continuum, will be held October 1-3, 2015 in New Orleans at the Hotel Monteleone. Our goal is to bring together medical school student affairs staff, program directors, and ACGME designated institutional officials - those who have a stake in the Match - to inform and improve how medical students select, transition to, and ultimately flourish in residency training.
