So Tell Me Again What Leadership Council Does

You might have noted that lots of really big recommendations come from the Leadership Council (LC). So you might have surmised that the church has entrusted to the LC a good deal of responsibility. And you’d be right.

I understand that the role of the LC has evolved over time. In the beginning, the LC functioned as a body to coordinate ministries and programs. Over many years, however, the church has increasingly looked to this group for significant leadership. Of course, all big decisions are made by the congregation in business meetings, but most significant issues will have been debated in the LC and then brought to the congregation. (The LC almost always runs things by the Deacons before bringing them to the church for a vote.)

The Leadership Council is made up of the Pastor and chairpersons from Personnel, Finance, Trustees, Missions, and Deacons. The Church Treasurer, WMU Director, and Sunday School Director are also members of the Leadership Council. Our Executive Pastor, Church Administrator and the Minister of Music & Worship meet with the LC in an ex-officio, non-voting role.

In the August business meeting you will hear a recommendation that the description of the LC in the Program Organization Manual be modified to more accurately reflect the LC’s responsibility. This is the recommendation: “The Leadership Council meets monthly for the purpose of communication and coordination among the Church's groups and organizations. The Leadership Council is further charged with serving the congregation and assisting the Pastor to recommend, develop, and implement strategic direction to ensure that the direction of FBC is consistent with our stated vision.”

You also will hear a recommendation that we expand the Leadership Council by two at-large members. The intent is to include high capacity leaders who happen not to be in one of the positions listed above. These two will be nominated by our nominating committee and will serve three-year terms. This move will simply enhance the LC’s potential to give good leadership to our church.

I’m grateful for these who give so much of their time and energy to the leadership of our congregation. And, more than ever, I’m grateful to be…

  • August 9th – Children’s Music & Missions Kickoff
  • August 27th – Student Music (both praise band and choir) begins its new year with special guest, Eric Mathis
