From Charlottesville to Huntsville

What happened in Charlottesville over the weekend has shaken our nation. The mowing over of people with a car was an act of hate. But it was not an isolated event. It was an act of hate born out of a culture of hate going by, among other names, “white supremacy.”

Let’s be clear: There is nothing “supreme” about the white supremacy movement.

Is it possible that there is some hope to be found in this past weekend? When Carolyn McKinstry was here she noted that the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church awoke the conscience of the nation and was a major turning point in the Civil Rights movement.  Could this past weekend have been another pivotal moment for us?

In an email to Keri and me on Saturday night an African American friend, David Bailey, quoted Ephesians 6:12: For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

David then said, I believe that the spiritual forces of systemic racism are losing, but they won’t go down without a fight.

So what can we do? Well, I have a suggestion. I am going to participate in a vigil to be held on Sunday evening, August 27, at the Huntsville courthouse. The vigil is to memorialize and mourn the lynchings of 10 African Americans in Madison County. Music will begin at 6:00 and the program at 6:30. (Bring your lawn chairs.) I invite you to join me in this service intended to unite, not divide.

I know there are lots of things that divide communities. But surely we can agree that the unjust and illegal lynchings of those ten people were tragic. Surely we can agree that we have a long way to go. And surely we can do better when it comes to race relations in our land.

At FBC we declare, “We believe all people are created in the image of God.” Our church can join other churches (historically black churches and historically white churches) in saying we actually believe that, and living like we believe it.

Your pastor,
New Approach to Local Missions
First Baptist Huntsville is partnering with community mission consultant, Tom Bassford. Tom recently spoke in Huntsville at the Cornerstone C4 Conference. I was very impressed with his approach to missions called Missions 3.0. We have engaged Tom to work with our church in helping to develop a more sustainable and long-term approach to community missions.

Missions 3.0 is designed to help churches move to a more sustainable work in our under-resourced communities. For more details about Missions 3.0 go to Tom's website, Significant Matters.
All are invited to hear an introduction to Missions 3.0 from Tom on Wednesday, August 16 at 12:00 PM in Room 118. Lunch will be provided, free of charge, with reservations. The meeting will last about 90 minutes with time afterward for questions.
After that meeting if you have a further interest in learning more about Missions 3.0 I have asked Tom to return to Huntsville to lead his 6 hour training session on Saturday, September 23 in the same location. There is no cost to you for any of the sessions.

I encourage you to attend this innovative meeting. I believe it will change how we approach missions for years to come.
