Seven Questions to Ask Before Posting to Social Media

A few days ago someone pointed out a recent article by Scott Slayton, a Baptist pastor from Chelsea, Alabama.  I’d never heard of Scott or the church he serves, but his words seemed so timely I am going to summarize it here.  The title of his article is, “Seven Questions to Ask Before Posting to Social Media.”  And here are the seven questions…

Do I have the correct facts?
Pastor Scott pointed his readers to Proverbs 18:2, which reads, “Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.”  Wow! I wonder how many times I have enjoyed hearing myself talk about a topic I didn’t fully understand!

Does this need to be said?
This time the pastor points us to Ephesians 4:29, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." So, let’s ask ourselves, “Do I really need to say this?”

Why do I need to be the person to say this?
Scott suggested we ask ourselves, “Do you have an insight into this issue that you haven’t seen somewhere else, or are you merely repeating an argument you read in another place? Do you have a role or responsibility where people are looking to you for guidance?”

Am I saying this in a way that represents Christ?
This suggestion is in the article:  “Before you post something, read it three or four times. Take a screenshot of it and send it to a friend. Is it kind? Is it accurate? Is it designed for the good of others? Will it negatively impact how other people think of Jesus?”

How could I be misunderstood?
People might assume they understand your motives when they don’t, or they might read something into your statement you didn’t intend to communicate.

What are my motives for saying this?
Certainly wanting to make myself look good, or make others look bad, is a bad motive.

Can I wait until tomorrow to say this?
Scott suggests, “If it can wait a day, save it as a draft and revisit it tomorrow. You may find that you read it with fresh eyes and see that you shouldn’t post it. Or you may see that it would be helpful to people and click ‘post.’ Either way, the longer you can wait before inserting yourself into a conversation, the better.”

I hope you find these words as helpful as I did.  It is important that we all think about how we are representing Jesus, and even our congregation, in the public square.
