Chapel Class

One of the most popular things in our church life over the last several years has been “Chapel Class” on Sunday evenings. Lots of people have loved that, and have missed it being a regular offering lately.

Well, it’s back, beginning August 13! It is now known as “Bible Study in the Chapel” and will be held from 5:00–6:00 p.m. on Sundays in our beloved chapel. Mark Seanor is the coordinator for “Bible Study in the Chapel.” He and Holly Canup have a stellar lineup of presenters.

It’s like an All-Star list of Master Teachers! We kick off on August 13 with Joseph and Cathy Hicks teaching on “The 4 Stages of Life.”

Of course the Mosaic service will begin on September 10. Student and Children’s activities will begin Wednesday, August 9. Sunday nights should be exciting at 600 Governors Drive!

Our guest organist this Sunday morning, July 23, is David Harrison. David has played at FBC before, leading in worship from the organ and piano as well as playing a full organ recital.

David is active in church music today as an organist, choral conductor, and composer. He earned the Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance at Mississippi College and the Master of Music degree at the IU Jacobs School of Music. While at IU, he also studied church music practicum and improvisation.

In 2015, David was appointed Lloyd Cast Organ Fellow at The Cathedral of All Saints (Episcopal) in Albany, New York, and has most recently served as the Assistant Organist Pro Tempore at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Roman Catholic), also in Albany. He has increased his interest in composition, with his first two full-scale works for organ and choir (Missa Sonora and Evening Service in G) soon to be released.

This fall, David looks forward to beginning study of injury-preventive keyboard technique with Dr. Barbara Lister-Sink at Salem College in North Carolina.

David is the nephew of First Baptist members Myrna Boyd and Milissa Hastings.
Student Mission Trip Update:
Books Needed for Elementary School
While on the mission trip to Philadelphia in June, the students and adults had the joy of working and helping at Samuel Pennypacker Elementary School. This school is located in downtown Philadelphia in a low income neighborhood and faces many unique challenges. Nearly 40% of the students attending this school are in foster care. Mr. Christopher Curtis, the computer specialist and a very important, caring, invested teacher, led in the assessing of work that needed to be accomplished and the assigning of jobs while we were there.

It is one of his goals to create a functioning library of age appropriate books for his students. At this time, there are almost no books and no librarian. To help achieve this, we at FBC have created a wish list on Amazon of books that can be purchased for this school. Please consider going on Amazon and selecting one or more books for these precious children. Amazon will then ship these books directly to Mr. Curtis at Pennypacker school. There will also be a box in the Student Center until August 15 where new, like new, and gently used books may be placed if you would like to donate any elementary-aged books that you have.

If you have any questions, please contact Lara Daugherty at 256-679-8535 or Dana Mucci at 256-797-0907.

Wednesday Nights
5:30-7:30 PM in Room 252
August 16 - September 27

In this 7-session Bible study, Lisa-Jo Baker and friends explore our relationship with Jesus as the ultimate model for authentic friendship. Nothing shapes us like the impact of a friend - it's how Jesus radically and intimately connects with us. So instead of chasing perfection, overcome your fear of being known and find the courage to connect.

God doesn't want to be your weekend getaway. His greatest desire is to be your everyday dwelling place - the home for your heart. Exploring the Lord's Prayer phrase by phrase, Lucado uses it as a floor plan to illustrate God's great house and all it has to offer - including spiritual nourishment, fellowship, and forgiveness.
