So Tell Me Again What a Fresh Expression Is

We’ve been talking about this for a long time, but because “fresh expressions” is such a new concept, it’s easy to be confused. So here’s an easy way to understand it: When you hear “fresh expression” think “new form.”  So a fresh expression of church is simply a new form of church. It’s not “church light.” It’s not “kinda, sorta church.” It’s not a ministry of our church. It’s church, and by “church” I mean it is a Christ-centered community engaging in worship, fellowship, discipleship, and outreach.

It doesn’t look like church as you and I most often think of church. It probably will be much smaller and much simpler. And the most important thing about fresh expressions of church is they are intended to reach people who are highly unlikely ever to walk through the doors of our church or any other existing church.

Most often, a fresh expression of church exists among a micro-culture, a subculture, a “people group.” I know of fresh expressions of church among kayakers, single moms, runners, internationals, restaurant workers, surfers, residents of retirement homes, people who live in the same neighborhood, and lots of other micro-cultures. Having a church for people who share something significant in common makes it easier for folks to feel at home.  Our church has teams working on planting fresh expressions of church among artists, among people in recovery, and in the neighborhood of Butler Terrace. These fresh expressions of church will have a tether to FBC, Huntsville.

Thank you for being the kind of church that is willing to explore creative means of reaching people who, to quote Ephesians 2:12, are “without hope and without God in the world.”  It is an honor to be…

Your Pastor,
Travis

Babies - 6th Grade
During the last week of June, our 4th-6th grade students and several of our FBC parents had a blast at CentriKid Camp in Campbellsville, Kentucky! The theme of camp this year was titled “Adventure Awaits: Follow the One, True Light,” and we embarked on quite the adventure of a lifetime as we journeyed together in learning that Jesus Christ is the One, True Light. Our kids had a ton of fun experiencing game stations like archery, Bible study time with camp leaders, intentional conversation in church group time, and an epic high-energy game called Organized Mass Chaos. We are thankful for each student who participated and pray that the truths they learned at camp will stick with them for years to come.

Music Ministry
Summer of 2017 has been a most interesting one in FBC Music Ministries!  We are so grateful for the many folks who share their God-given talents (and time and energy) through the myriad of opportunities for ministry which are available through a music group.

The STUDENT MUSIC mission trip to Philadelphia was an amazing 8 days, bringing to culmination months of preparation on the part of our student singers and instrumentalists.  They used the wonderful gift of music to bridge cultural divides, socio-economic divides, and age differences to minister in such an effective manner.  Our church would have been SO PROUD of both the spirit and the sound produced by this group.

Then, our FBC ORCHESTRA led the church in an outstanding God and Country Celebration.  Performing music from stellar composers and blending in beautiful visual images appropriate to the repertoire, our church orchestra truly "wowed" the audience packed into the Life Center with a concert of American, sacred, and patriotic music.

Then, our MUSIC CAMP for children experienced another record-breaking registration, and, more importantly, led children to understand with heart, mind, body and spirit (the whole person) the person and presence of Jesus Christ.  Music is one of God's gifts that enables that to happen.  It was a terrific week.  We are so grateful to our Interim Children's Choir Coordinator, Suzanne Hefner, and her truly outstanding team of leaders (directors, teachers, assistants, students, support staff, and music ministry staff) for making MC 2017 such an effective week.

And, amidst all of these special endeavors, our Music Ministry Staff has been in transition.  We say farewell to Lea Anne Hardy this week and welcome aboard Barbara Sizemore to the position of full-time Music Ministry Assistant.  These ladies, along with Amy Helser in our office, fill such a vital role in the Music Ministries at FBC.  (I know I hear an "amen" from not only Jeremy and myself but also hundreds of church members!).

Finally, of course, we anticipate the arrival next week of Dr. Esther Kim, our new Associate Minister of Music and Organist.  Our search committee, Personnel Committee, Deacons, church leadership and the many music ministry participants who have already met Esther and family can affirm with me that God has indeed been so gracious in leading FBC in this process.  Please hold Esther and her family in your prayers as they make the transition and find their significant place in the FBC ministries that stretch throughout our city, region and beyond.
