Wednesdays in July

Last year’s experiment with Bible Studies at midday instead of in the evenings worked, so we’re doing it again!

On Wednesday, July 12, 19 and 26 (there are no activities on July 5) we will host a study of “Old Books, New Looks”:  A Survey of the Old Testament.

Our study will be a down-to-earth, practical look at the Old Testament.  We will talk about how it all fits together, about principles of reading and interpreting the Old Testament, about what such ancient books mean to us, and so on.  The teachings will be prepared with outsiders in mind, so this is a good opportunity to invite friends to Wednesday Bible Study.  If you are near the church at mid-day, please come.  If you have friends near the church at mid-day, invite them!

We will begin serving at 11:45. Teaching will begin at 12:15. Teaching will conclude at 12:45 (so that people can be back at work by 1:00).

I hope to see you on Wednesdays in July!

Perry County Mission Trip
Last week, 27 members and staff of First Baptist Church Huntsville, led by Dennis Brooks, left the confines of Madison County and headed roughly three hours south to Perry County, Alabama. The aim of the trip was to continue our construction-based work in an area where the church has served continuously for about 15 years.

The team was based out of Judson College, a historic Baptist school in the heart of Marion, Alabama. In Marion and Perry County as a whole, 35% of the population lives under the poverty line, including 50% of those under the age of 18.

During our time in Perry County, the team from First Baptist worked on a multitude of projects. These included: building a wheelchair ramp for Mrs. King, who was confined to her home; putting in a new door, window, and back deck for Mrs. Lucky; installing new metal roofing on a duplex; deconstructing and replacing a breezeway of the Clachar’s house; hanging sheetrock on the Sowing Seeds of Hope’s newly expanded offices; replacing roofing on Dr. Chen’s carport; and continuing the work on a community concession stand, including installing a wall, new doors, and all new electrical.

As members of First Baptist were able to tangibly serve the community in Perry County, we were also blessed by those whom we worked with. Members of the town often came to lend a hand, offer snacks, and give their praises for simply coming. Each group, those coming to Perry County and those living there, were mutually blessed.

Jeremiah 29:7 states, “But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” We can whole-heartedly say that in our time in Perry County we sought the well-being of its people, as our service towards them was in turn hope giving for ourselves. We pray to see you there next year as we continue to seek the welfare of Perry County!
