Another Step Closer to Fresh Expressions of Church

After a number of wonderful discussions among people interested in fresh expressions of church, we have narrowed our list of initial efforts to three.

Joan Whetzel will be leading the team to launch a “dinner church” in the Butler Terrace neighborhood. She and others already have established relationships there, primarily through children. There is a “dinner church” model growing out of Seattle which we are following. We believe this is a really good opportunity to “take the church Jesus loves to the people Jesus loves.”

Tony Antoine will be leading the team to launch a fresh expression of church among individuals and families in recovery from addictions. Although we know of some other churches that have begun in the recovery community, we are not following any particular model. Rather, we are ready to listen to God’s Spirit, and to the people we hope to reach, in order to discern how to begin a form of church that would be transformative for people in recovery.

JoAnn Bugg will be leading the team to begin a new form of church with the mission of engaging people in Huntsville’s art community. As with the church for the recovery community, we are still in the “discernment” stage. That means we need to hear from God and the arts community as we shape this new form of church such that it is meaningful for artists.

Now we need teams to help begin these three new forms of church. For the “dinner church” we need a team of about (twenty) people. For the recovery and art community churches we need three to twelve people. You can do this and still remain involved on Sundays at FBC, for these new forms of church almost certainly will not gather on Sunday mornings. If you have a heart for people beyond the family of God, a missionary spirit, and a readiness to be part of a new movement, we would love to have you join in this effort.

Below are the dates and times for the initial information meetings. If you feel drawn to be part of one of these new forms of church, even if you are not yet ready to make a commitment, we would love to have you come.

Recovery Community: Sunday, June 4, 6:00
“Dinner Church” in Butler Terrace: Thursday, June 8, 6:30
Art Community: Sunday, June 11, 6:30

There are some other initiatives in their early stages about which you will hear soon. Would you prayerfully consider being part of one of these teams, or being a prayer supporter of this initiative?

Thank you for being the kind of church that is willing to consider new forms of church for people highly unlikely ever to come to 600 Governors Drive. It is such an honor to be…
