Kendra Smith: Award Winning Singer Still in High School

She won a major music award in March.  Received the key to her hometown in April.  The State House of Representatives issued a congratulatory resolution to honor her achievements.

And she is still in high school.

No, this is not an old story about Taylor Swift but a new story about emerging gospel artist Kendra Smith.  The Florence, South Carolina, teenager received the Youth Project of the Year Stellar Award for her album, Something New, at the 30th Stellar Gospel Music Awards in Las Vegas in March.

A second semester senior at South Florence High School, Kendra was born into a family of church musicians, including an aunt who sang with Donnie Harper's famous New Jersey Mass Choir.  Kendra started recording in 2008 and four years later was named South Carolina Music Awards Gospel Artist of the Year.  She has also been nominated for several 2015 Rhythm of Gospel Awards. Something New was recorded for her father's label, DeVine Records Management LLC, and released in 2014.  Although Garland Miche Waller, former music director for choir master John P. Kee, produced, nobody could have anticipated the album would gain national award attention.

Nevertheless, buoyed by its singles, "I'll Praise You Forever" and "Deep Down," the album captured the interest of industry leaders and gospel music enthusiasts.  The Journal of Gospel Music made "Deep Down" its Pick of the Week for September 1, 2014, singling out Kendra's "commanding voice and confident presence" and calling her "a young woman to watch."  Stellar voters propelled Something New through two rounds of nominations and past the other three finalists for the Youth Project of the Year award.

Just last month, Kendra was feted at a special reception held at the Florence (SC) County Museum, where she received a key to the city.  The museum plans to include her accomplishments in its collection for future generations to learn from and gain inspiration.

Kendra is poised to minister in music nationally and overseas, as well.

The singer anticipates a summer tour and a new single titled "Power".  This fall, she will enroll in Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where she plans to major in music education.  Having achieved more than gospel artists twice her age, Kendra is not looking back.

"I'm only eighteen," she said.  "I have so much more to accomplish."

The voice whispers through the speakers, enticing us on with guitar toward "words of passion" filled with ecstasy. Smooth, sensual, and peaceful, allowing you to "drift away toward a thousand suns." Keeps the humidity at bay for a few minutes, and give the mind aces to wander along with the tasty guitar riffs that wander in from time to time. A full-flavored liquid meal that creates the feeling of cool.

2015 JUS` BLUES MUSIC AWARDS
2015 JUS` BLUES MUSIC AWARDS
LETS CHANGE HISTORY
THE MUSIC SPECIALIST

By attending Midem over the past 20 years I have seen the growth and changes within the Global entertainment industry. American culture has become an integral portion of the world music, film and Tech communities. What I have also seen is the lack of American musicians, artist, creators, videographers, film makers, producers and writers, tech companies and music professionals attending.

For 2015 I have made a commitment to change the status by assisting a cadre of American companies in attending Midem, preparing there materials and obtaining business meetings while there.

American Urban based artists, publishers, producers; writers, film makers, label owners, magazine owners and entertainment industry entrepreneurs are wholly under rated and under represented on the world market place. During one of my daily walks around the MIDEM convention exhibition area, a few years ago, I ventured in to the Electronic / Urban Village at Midem.  The name suggested that here would be a place where various types of Electronic and Urban based musical products and opportunities would be found. A place where companies from around the world could come and find music, DVD's, film, magazines and digital deals from the best Urban and Electronic makers in the world. Feeling that the Urban marketplace should be over flowing with product by and about people of color I went looking for the best in the world

What I saw was several different spaces occupied by every nationality BUT people of color.  Blatantly missing were American Hip Hop, R&B, Southern Soul, Blues, Jazz, Americana and Gospel companies.  In fact I saw NO REPRESENTATION at all from any Black or Hispanic owned company from the United States in this area.  At least 50% of all the music I saw, and heard during MIDEM came from people of color worldwide, but there was less than 5% participation from African Americans conference wide and

less than 1% booth participation.  The only Hip Hop artist of any notoriety that I saw making meetings and doing deals was Chuck D, and he brought a group of business people with him as a support factor. American Hip
Hop has made major influence around the world I saw Death Row Records from Germany and even though South Africa has licensed Little John's music thru THE ORCHARD there was not another Atlanta based rapper or representative at the conference.

Countries from around the world were looking for music and DVD products from American based "Urban" companies yet there were virtually none to be found. The Japanese, South Africans, French, Belgium, Swedes and every English speaking country are all looking for American Hip Hop, Jazz, Gospel, Southern Soul, Americana, Blues and Reggae, but once again there were NO representatives of any of the major artists nor any revenue generating INDEPENDENT  COMPANIES available that I saw or heard of.

This has to stop now especially while there is a window open for such great financial and cultural reward.

So I am making the call to mobilize the American Urban based artists, publishers, producers, writers, film makers, label owners, magazine owners and entertainment industry entrepreneurs.  I have started talking with different companies and organizations to acquire a cadre of African American owned entertainment businesses that will be able to represent their products and make deals on an International basis for MIDEM 2015.

Come join the movement to success.
