3 Questions with...

Kelcie Dugger

Cleveland

kelcie
A 10-year veteran of the Near West stage (she debuted in America: Through the Looking Glass in 2002), Kelcie can be found working behind the scenes this summer as the Assistant Director for Miss Saigon.

1. What was your favorite role?

Ti Moune in Once On This Island! There's so much about Ti Moune that I've tried to instill in myself; her faith, her passion, and her determination, to name a few.

2.  What life lessons have you learned at Near West?

I was home schooled when I was younger so I didn't have very good social skills. Of course, I've learned about acting and how to properly use my voice, but most importantly, I've learned how to interact with people and voice my opinions.

3. What is your favorite summer activity?

NWT! I love spending my summers in the obnoxiously hot Near West building! Now that I'm too old to do the summer youth shows, I've been looking for ways to still be involved, which is why when Bob Navis asked me to assistant direct Miss Saigon, I was ecstatic! I can't thank everyone at NWT enough for all they've done for me. 10 years and I'm still learning a lot of new and exciting things!

Performed by over 30 talented teens in Near West's dynamic in-the-round environment, Miss Saigon brings Puccini's Madame Butterfly to post-millennium America in a moving testament to the resiliency of the human spirit. In the final chaos of the Vietnam War, an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl fall in love, only to be separated during the fall of Saigon. This is an intimate story of love, war, loyalty, survival and a mother's drive to give her child a future of promise. Raw and uncompromising, Miss Saigon is an intense experience of the losses suffered and the sacrifices made in a fearful world using violence to achieve peace. Songs include: "The Movie In My Mind," "Sun & Moon" and "The Last Night of the World."

THE CREATIVE EDGE

LIFE AS A PERFORMING ART

As we begin exploring the themes of Miss Saigon... the Vietnam War, Patriotism, Racism, Ideological Propaganda,USA Imperialism, Capitalism/Communism and more.... the following monologue from Man of La Mancha comes to mind:

"I've been a soldier and a slave. I've seen my comrades fall in battle or die more slowly under the lash in Africa. I've held them in my arms at the final moment. These were men who saw life as it is, yet they died despairing. No glory, no brave last words, only their eyes, filled with confusion, questioning "Why?" I don't think they were wondering why they were dying, but why they had ever lived. When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? To surrender dreams- this may be madness; to seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness! But maddest of all - -to see life as it is and not as it should be."  - Miguel De Cervantes

Enjoy these three quotes by George Bernard Shaw:

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself."

"Imagination is the beginning of creation.  You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will.

"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it."
