Taliesin Preservation staff and volunteers partnered with the Ice Age Trail Alliance to build a hiking trail at Taliesin in September. The path weaves in and out of the woods and through prairies midway up the slope of the Welsh Hills between the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center and Unity Chapel. First Lady "Lady Bird" Johnson Visits Taliesin: Special Guest at Opening of The Spring Green
Frank Lloyd Wright's “Riverview Terrace” overlooking the Wisconsin River at the edge of the Taliesin estate opened on September 22, 1967, as The Spring Green restaurant in time for a visit by First Lady “Lady Bird” Johnson. As part of her Keep America Beautiful campaign, Johnson was the invited guest of a Spring Green community arts organization with connections to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Department of Agriculture, which had received support for rural arts development through a new National Endowment for the Arts Grant.
Olgivanna Lloyd Wright invited the First Lady to a formal pre-opening reception at Taliesin, with William Wesley Peters, head of Taliesin Associated Architects (TAA), who had completed the restaurant design that Wright had halfway constructed before he passed away in 1959. The effort dedicated to finishing the interiors just in time for the First Lady’s arrival received notice in the Spring Green, Madison, and Milwaukee newspapers.
The publicity brought continued attention to Wright’s “Broadacre City” plan for urban decentralization which would provide insight into Taliesin's master plan and serve as the fundamental inspiration for TAA in designing projects adjacent to Taliesin along the Wisconsin River and elsewhere in the world in the decades to come.
