The Monthly Newsletter of the IOBA

The Flyleaf: The monthly newsletter of the IOBA!

Alfred Nobel established the Nobel Prize as part of his will after reading his own premature obituary "The merchant of death is dead" (his brother Ludvig had died - Alfred would go on to live eight more years) in a French newspaper;  he took stock of how he was viewed and decided to do something positive for the world and his legacy. He could have gone another way,  as Sarah Winchester (wife of William Wirt Winchester of Winchester rifle fame) did, and go crazy, see ghosts in every corner of her house and decide that in order to appease the ghosts, she had to keep adding bits onto her house in perpetuity ( not even her death has halted the construction).
Personally, I prefer Alfred's bequest.

In honor of this, this month's theme is books by or about winners of the Nobel Prize.

Enjoy!

The Tree of Man

Patrick White was the first Australian Author to win the Nobel prize for Literature.

Barbara McClintock offprints

The Second World War - Winston Churchill

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1953 in two categories -- peace and literature. He finally won the Nobel Prize for literature for 'his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values'.

Many believe the novel to be a direct reaction to the possible candidacy of Huey Long for president in 1936. It was published five years after Lewis became the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

It Can't Happen Here - Sinclair Lewis

The Plays of John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy OM was an English novelist and playwright. Notable works include "The Forsythe Saga" (1906-1921) and its sequels, A Modern Comedy and End of the Chapter. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932.

Everything To Gain is their warm and unpretentious account of their successful adjustment to a new life, full of encouragement and insight for any couple wanting to renew their commitment to each other and to life Jimmy Carter is a former U. S. President and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

A Beautiful Mind

"A legend by the age of thirty, recognized as a mathematical genius even as he slipped into madness, John Nash emerged after decades of ghost-like existence to win a Nobel and world acclaim. "

Until Next Month...

Most of the books that you'll find by Nobel Prize winners are either biographies or fiction... unless that is, you're interested in reading chemistry treatises or medical abstracts. I suppose there are mathematical theorems that some of us lesser folk  might manage to muddle through, but the astrophysics (string theory or quantum mechanics anyone?) would do me in in a second. I wouldn't be lulled to sleep, I'd be cross-eyed and headachy instantly. The men and women awarded the Nobel Prize have been heroic people in one way or another, and Alfred Nobel's concern for his legacy has provided the world with a very noble outlet to promote them.
