Bingo Blessings and Beyond
Thank you VHUMC for your continued support of our mission projects. For weeks we collected prizes for the Children's Harbor bingo closet and ended our collection with a fun night of Bingo with our entire VHUMC Children's Harbor team. Even after the night was over, the prizes continued to come in. Your generosity was amazing! Children's Harbor has helped so many, and we at VHUMC feel blessed to be a part of this wonderful ministry. Please see below how one of our own members was touched by Children's Harbor.

On various occasions I have had the opportunity to volunteer at Children's Harbor through VHUMC. I always looked forward to this event and enjoyed my time spent there. It was not until our daughter, Emme, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in June of 2015, that Children's Harbor would have a new meaning to our family. During the eight days she was in the hospital and the weeks following, Children's Harbor was an incredible blessing to our family!

The one resource that was the most important to me was the hairstylist, Cleresea. Having a daughter who had just undergone two brain surgeries I was horrified to wash her hair. We took Emme to see Cleresea and she was so kind and patient. She took extra special care of her. She washed her hair, cut it to accommodate her stitches, plates and staples and gave Emme a new confidence of her appearance. She taught us how to wash her hair, where to be gentle, how to dry it, etc. This very simple task gave us a much needed confidence! Not only were they able to help Emme, but our entire family including our other children.

Children's Harbor works really hard to include the entire family and not just focus on the patient. There are too many events/resources they provide to families to list them all, but I encourage you to visit their website and spend some time at Children's Harbor to learn more about this incredible facility and how you can get involved. On behalf our family I want to say thank to our church and to each of you for continued support of Children's Harbor.

Help Needed for Louisiana and Mississippi
Your response to the flooding in Louisiana and Mississippi has been amazing! $10,219 has been given through VHUMC for this need and many of you have brought in supplies or volunteered your time to help. Thank you.

Currently all UMCOR warehouses throughout the country (including the United Methodist Disaster Response Warehouse in Decatur) are running low on cleaning buckets because all available kits have been shipped to Louisiana. Our help is needed to replenish these much-needed supplies! Please visit the link to find out how you can help and see the list of cleaning bucket items. All items or completed buckets can be delivered to the Missions office.

Adult Education Opportunities
Our church exists to provide a community where everyone can experience a Christ-centered life of purpose. We want to encourage every member, along with many friends and guests, to share in opportunities for biblical study and spiritual growth here at Vestavia Hills. These studies serve as a resource for connecting the church's members and guests with small group opportunities within the church. Click on the link to find your next group or class!

Adult Sunday School Leaders Meeting
Please join us on Wednesday, September 7, from 5-6 pm, in room 206 to discuss new initiatives coming for our adult classes. Some leaders attended the meeting on August 31, so this is for those who couldn't make that one. There are new tools and resources we would like to share. Plus, we want to know how we can best support you in ministry and outreach among your classes. Thanks for all you do!
3rd Grade Bible Sunday
Thank you to all who attended our 11:00 traditional worship service last Sunday when we presented Bibles to 48 of our 3rd graders. What an honor! We pray that these children use their Bibles to help guide them throughout their lives.
Youth Choir Car Wash
Come support our youth choir. The New Life Singers Youth Choir has been invited to perform in New York City in May 2017. The choir will be raising money by hosting a car wash on Sunday, September 11, beginning at 9:00 am and running into the afternoon. Contact Quint Harris (qharris@vhumc.org) or Charlie Rose (charlierose1974@gmail.com) with any questions.
September Memory Verse
Each school year our 1st-5th graders have the opportunity to memorize a new Bible verse each month. Our September memory verse is: "With the Lord on my side I do not fear. What can mortals do to me?" -Psalm 118:6. 1st-5th graders can recite the verse in the elementary office before or after Sunday School for a sweet treat and a chance to win a grand prize at the end of the school year!
Opportunities to Serve in Contemporary Service
If you attend the 11:00 Contemporary Worship Service and can assist on a ministry team, please contact Suzanne Scott-Trammell (sstrammell@vhumc.org / 769-0136). She can discuss various commitments required on the teams: ushers, refreshments, sound/technology, and/or praise band. Worship is at its best in community - we are stronger with input, insights, and relationships among each of us.
