Memorial for Dick Roza '53
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of  Richard "Dick" Roza '53  on February 6.  A l ongtime resident of San Carlos, Dick Roza, a.k.a. the "Rockit," 81, passed away after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was the father of Mike Roza '84 and the grandfather of Ryan Allgrove '08.

Dick attended Mount Carmel Elementary School, Serra High School and San Jose State University. In 2003, he was honored with Serra's Junipero Serra Award, the school's highest alumni honor, for his outstanding service to Catholic education.

A Funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 18 at St. Charles Catholic Church, which is located at 880 Tamarack Avenue in San Carlos. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick's name may be made to the Junipero Serra High School Endowment Fund: 451 West 20th Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94403.

Alumni Spotlight: Class of '59
A big thank you to the Class of 1959, which brought 20 members to the 50 Year Club luncheon last month at Serra. We are grateful to the Class of '59, which has shown tremendous support for Fund a Dream, the Serra Golf Classic and the Campaign for Serra. Spearheaded by the leadership of Don McMullen, Carmen Gagliardi and Gary Hughes, the class came together to name the Fine Arts Courtyard as a permanent reminder of the Class of '59's commitment to Serra.

Kyle Wilson '17 Honored By College Board
Serra senior and Saint Robert's alumnus Kyle Wilson was recently recognized as a National Hispanic Scholar. He is an honor student with a 4.62 weighted GPA and is enrolled in challenging courses including AP literature, AP psychology and AP calculus.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program, which is operated by the College Board, recognizes the top two percent of the Hispanic/Latino students who take the PSAT. Qualifiers must have outstanding test scores and at least a 3.5 GPA.

In addition to excelling in academics, Kyle is Serra's executive council vice president, Block Society president and a Kairos retreat leader. He has also participated in an immersion trip to Watsonville, has completed more than 200 hours of Christian service and is a member of Serra's WCAL-champion wrestling team. Kyle already has been accepted to Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount, and he is awaiting decisions from Stanford, UCLA and UC Berkeley.

"I have had a very positive experience at Serra," said Kyle. "I have made connections with teachers and coaches and have learned how to communicate effectively. Most important, I have learned how to get the most out of myself as a student and as a citizen."

Oklahoma!
Tri-School Productions will present its spring musical, Oklahoma, at 7:30 p.m. on March 24, 25, 31 and April 1; and at 2 p.m. on March 26.

Serra Wrestling Wins WCAL Championship
Varsity wrestling, which ended the dual meet season in a three-way tie for the league lead, won the WCAL championship outright at the league tournament on Saturday.  This is the first time Serra wrestling has won back-to-back league championships. Head Coach Mike Klobuchar '90 has now won championships in each of his first two years as the leader of Padre wrestling.
Spring Sports Preview
Spring sports practices are underway at Serra, with Padre athletes working hard in the pool, on the field, on the court and in the crew boats. Serra's swim team returns three members of its record-setting 400-freestyle relay team in sophomore Brooks Taner, junior Alec Cullen and junior Riley Scanlan.  Overall, the swim team finished seventh in the CCS in 2016.

Crew is set to build on its national success over the past two years with captains Hector Robles, Tyler Baumann and Alex Beheshti. Beheshti recently committed to attend the University of Pennsylvania next year.

Serra baseball will look to defend its 2016 WCAL title with senior returners Pat Caulfield, Thomas McCarthy and James Halpin. McCarthy is committed to USF and junior Cameron Barstad is committed to the University of Oregon.
