50-Year Club Recap
The 50-Year Club Luncheon on January 19 had the largest attendance in Serra history. A crowd of 80 alumni from the classes of 1944-1967 caught up with each other and reminisced about their Serra days in the Serra library. The lunch was catered by Serra alumnus Kevin Weir '70.

One attendee was Al Chanteloup '50, who was the quarterback of the 1949 football team and the captain of the first baseball team. He is a member of Serra's Athletics Hall of Fame. He went on to become a high school government and economics teacher in the Palo Alto School District, as well as a respected coach.

"I came today to keep in contact with people I went to high school with years ago," he said. "I learned values at Serra, such as how to stick with something and work hard at it," he recounted. "I came here today to keep in contact with the people I went to high school with years ago. It's always a lot of fun to catch up and reconnect."

Musical
Tri-School Productions is proud to present West Side Story this spring! Relive the epic tale of two members of the Jets and the Sharks entwined in a whirlwind romance

"The opportunity to play a lead role in my senior year of high school is amazing," said Holden Boger. "The role of Tony is emotionally intense, and will require much hard work and contemplation of character choices and motivations. It is a challenge I am thrilled to take on!"

There will be five performances in total - March 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and March 18 at 2 p.m. See you at Gellert Auditorium for West Side Story
Chip Kelly Visits Serra
UCLA Head Coach Chip Kelly visited Serra this month to visit with Padre  senior Nio Mafi. Nio has committed to play football for the Bruins.

Besides being a highly-recruited football player, Nio is an honor student with a 3.7 GPA and a member of the Men's Chorus and Tri-School Chorus. He is a member of the Campus Ministry Leadership Team, Encounter, and will be a leader this spring on a four-day Kairos retreat.

"Deciding to attend Serra has truly been one of the greatest decisions I've ever made," he said. "This school has helped me form bonds and friendships with classmates I now call my brothers. Without the environment and culture present at Serra, I wouldn't have been able to grow this much as a student and as an athlete."

"A testament to this is that it has given me the chance to go to college," added Nio. "My family would have never been able to afford college, but with the right guidance, Serra has enabled me to earn a full scholarship to the number one public school in the country! This is why I will forever be grateful and proud to call myself a Padre."
Design-Led Innovation Program
Serra's new design thinking course, launched at the beginning of the spring semester, is the foundation of our new Design-Led Innovation Program. This program is an interdisciplinary, three-year course of study in which students will be introduced to the principles of design thinking-a human-centered approach to creative problem solving.

It is designed to give students opportunities to become innovators, and not just consumers, who find solutions to real world problems. It dr aws on logic, imagination, intuition, and systematic reasoning to explore what could be-to create solutions that will truly benefit the end user.

Serra has developed its Design-Led Innovation Program in partnership with Andrea Anderson, Vice President-Design Thinking, SAP Design, and her team.  Find out more at the link below!

Spring Sports
Chris Houle has been named Serra baseball's new head coach. Joining his staff will be alumni Dan Nolan '01, Antonio Freschet '12 and Matt Page '10. Long-time coach Tom Monahan will also be coming back to coach varsity this year. Senior pitcher Mitchell Scott has committed to UC Berkeley, catcher Cameron Barstad has committed to Oregon, and pitcher Ryan Sutter has committed to UC Davis.

Coming off one its best seasons in years, Serra volleyball will look to dive even deeper into the CCS playoffs this year. The Padres will be led by returning First-Team All-League players Zachary Smith and Michael Gonzales.

Swimming will be led by two-time state qualifier and All-American Brooks Taner. Taner is just a junior who set two school records last year and finished third in the nation  among  sophomores in the breast stroke.

Track will return its entire 4x400 relay team of Anthony Ovalle, Brendon Carbullido, Scott Fitzpatrick and Tyler Mak. The foursome won Serra's fourth consecutive CCS championship last year and set a school record. High-jumping junior Parker McDonald also returns to defend his own CCS title. He placed seventh in the state championships and also earned a WCAL title in the triple-jump.

Crew will be led by Stanford-commit Tyler Baumann. The Padres won the Pacific Invitational last year and sent three seniors to row in college at the University of Pennsylvania, Washington State University and Gonzaga University.

Elliot Adams, on varsity since he was a freshman, will provide senior leadership for Serra's lacrosse team. Junior Brendan Callagy is another returning All-League player.
