Dear Serra Alumni,

Thanks to all who attended our Serra Golf Classic and Ladies' Tennis Tournament last month.  It was another great day of reconnecting and relaxing on the links and courts of the Peninsula Golf and Country Club.  This year, $25,000 was raised for the Serra Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Summer is in full swing here at Serra, filled with swim lessons, summer camp, summer school and drama camp. Construction of our new track and field is wrapping up and will be finished within the next couple of weeks.  I hope to see you on campus soon!

Sincerely,

Bob Greene, Jr. '85

Alumni News
Alumni Hires
Two alumni have been recently hired as full-time staff members for the upcoming school year.  Carl Dos Remedios '78 has been hired as our admissions director and Christopher Buckels '01 will teach theology.

Carl comes to us with tremendous experience in secondary school admissions offices, including stints as the director of admissions for the Harker School in San Jose, Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton and Moreau High School in Hayward.

Chris earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from UC Davis, where he currently lectures.  He also holds degrees from Fordham University and St. Mary's College.  Welcome to our new alumni staff members!
Collin Theroux '12 at the College World Series
Collin Theroux '12 started as catcher for the Oklahoma State Cowboys this season and was part of the team's run to the College World Series.  The Cowboys completed one of the best seasons in school history. Theroux recently signed with the Oakland Athletics after being selected in the 2016 MLB draft.
Ray Looze '86 at the Olympics
Ray Looze '86 has earned a spot on the swimming coaching staff for Team USA at Rio 2016.  Ray is the head coach for Indiana University's swimming and diving program.

"It is a dream come true to be on a U.S. Olympic coaching staff," said Looze. "To be able to represent the United States of America is a humbling honor that I will never forget."

Looze became the first swimming coach in Big Ten league history to be named both the men's and women's conference coach of the year during the same season. Looze has won Big Ten Swimming Coach of the Year honors a total of six times.

Field Construction
Serra new track and field surfaces are beginning to take shape.  For the first time in school history,  Serra's field will feature golden numbers at the 50 yard line and blue end zones.

The first game on the new field will be Serra's home football opener on August 27 against Sac-Joaquin Section powerhouse St. Mary's of Stockton.
Class of 2016
Ninety-seven percent of the members of the Class of 2016 were accepted to four-year universities this year.  In total, our 208 graduates earned $17,183,392 in college scholarships.

Congratulations to our valedictorians - Miles Todzo (Duke University), Mikey Takla (USC) and Jose Sandoval
(UC Davis).
Immersion Trips
Serra's Campus Ministry team led two Immersion trips last month to Watsonville and Los Angeles.

The Watsonville trip consisted of three days working on  raspberry farm, a half-day at a food bank, a full day visiting two California missions, and two days of service working at soup kitchens.

The experience in Los Angeles focused on various social justice issues. The group stayed at Dolores Mission Catholic School in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, an area once debilitated by gang violence. Highlights included a visit to world-renowned Homeboy Industries.
