New Beginnings Congregational Retreat, 2016!

If God is still speaking, what is God saying to Arlington Community Church about what our ministry together will be in the coming years?  We have been a faithful congregation, and now it is time for us to again listen for God's voice in our own hearts and voices, and in the community and world around us.

Birth Announcements

Anna-Maria and David Hertzer are delighted to announce the arrival of their first grandchild, Claire Elisabeth Hallowell, daughter of Emily and Steve Hallowell. Claire was born in San Francisco at 2:12 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, weighing 7 pounds 4 ounces, and measuring 21.5 inches. She is named for Emily's maternal grandmother Claire, and Steve's maternal grandmother Elisabeth. Mother and baby are doing well.

Juliana Nuñ ez-Saksa & George Saska are proud to announce the birth of their son Jason George Alejandro born September 22, 2016 in Villahermosa, Tobasco Mexico.
Update on Solar Project

We have received PG&E's true-up bill for the period 08 03 15 to 08 03 16, and we have saved $9246 versus what we would have paid if we hadn't done solar.  The annual true-up bill settles our account for the year with PG&E while we have paid a nominal amount each month as an estimated cost.

The true-up bill was $2065 and would have been $1919 if we had solar starting 08 03 15 instead of starting 9/1/15 when it actually was turned on.

We had estimated that the true-up bill would be $404 if we had solar starting 08 03 15.
From conversations with Sun Light & Power, a major factor for the higher than expected true-up bill was that we had more foggy weather during the peak price periods in the summer of 2016.  All of their customers in the bay area have experienced the same problem this year.  The solar output has been 10% low vs. expected due to the fog, year to date.
SLP will have a technician check our system on 09 21 16 to see if there are any problems with its operation.

Unused Toiletries

The Board of Missions and Social Justice invites contributions of unused toiletries - especially the little ones you pick up when traveling. We are donating to a shower program for Homeless people that is offered at the Albany Pool.

Shampoos, soaps, shower jells, lotions are all welcome. We also invite donations of "light weight" wash clothes. Light ones dry more quickly and and can be re-used by folks who participate in the program.  Thank you for dropping them off in the basket in the narthex that we also use for canned goods.

Don't forget we ALWAYS can use Peanut Butter and Tuna for the Food Pantry.

East Bay Jubilee Event
Saturday October 8 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

It would be wonderful if a group from ACC could attend - especially since we are a Jubilee Congregation.

At 10 to noon at St. Columba Catholic church we'll have information, speakers, and discussion on two important justice issues that impact ALL our communities:

1.)  Pay Day Loans which are predatory and affect those in need. ...and

2.)  Anonymous Shell Companies that new legislation proposes to bring out into the open.

These companies are used to hide assets that should be taxed to benefit the infrastructure and programs for needy in our communities. They are also used to hide terrorist funds, and moneys gained from participation in illegal activities. Under current law they are perfectly legal in the U.S.  The international community is looking to us to stop the abuse.

If you are interested in attending October 8 th, please let Linda know.

Faith Is a Verb...
Musings By Pastor Tony
September 16, 2016
I've been reading a critique of the modern progressive Protestant church. The author's main point is that in the last several decades the consumerist culture has affected the church more than the church has given moral shape to our culture. The critique is difficult to read. The author looks at mega churches and critiques them as a church-going population that seeks not to grow and deepen their faith, but to grow and deepen their wealth. He also critiques smaller churches as places where people go not to learn to comfort the oppressed, but to be comforted in their own ways of life. The author states that in seeking to please everyone, churches have become consumer driven commodities, pastors become marketing specialists, and churchgoers become customers who are always right.

Engaging the Scripture
Sunday September 25, 2016

As you read this passage about Wisdom, a female form who was present at the beginning of creation, compare it to the opening of the Gospel of John and Colossians 1: 15-20. How does the Wisdom in Proverbs match our idea of Christ, not merely the embodiment in Jesus, but the ongoing spirit of Christ present at communion, in baptisms, and as head of the church?  The idea of Wisdom in the Old testament were transmitted into the idea of the spirit of Christ in the New testament.

See you Sunday!
