Academic Excellence

Congratulations to Chris Anderson '18, who received a Certificate of Merit for outstanding academic performance as evidenced by his score on the SATs. His score was among the 5,000 highest scores in Pennsylvania. 

Carroll wins Hi-Q competition
Congratulations to our Hi-Q team, led by Mrs. Carpenter, who defeated Notre Dame and Sun Valley in December in their home match.

Twenty-one high schools participate in Delco Hi-Q. Each school team has ten members, and each school hosts one contest during the regular season. Three teams compete at each regular season match, and there are three rounds in each match.
Parent's Association Meeting

The first Parent's Association of the New Year will be Monday, Jan. 8, 7 p.m. A member of the school administration will be there to answer any questions and discuss some school topics.
Students learn about Northern Ireland

On Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, Dr. Erin McLaughlin, spoke with Mr. Scanlan's Human Geography students about the troubles in Northern Ireland.

Dr. McLaughlin teaches a class entitled, "Engagements for the Common Good: Northern Ireland," at Cabrini University.

She has interviewed Bik McFarlane and Gerry Adams, who were involved in the hunger strikes, and Gerry O'Hara, who gave evidence to the Sayville Inquiry regarding Bloody Sunday.

Carroll Girls Basketball had a great day cooking and preparing meals for the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County.

Indoor Track & Field

Boys Indoor Track & Field had big performances at the TFCAofGP Meet at Lehigh University on Dec. 22.

Aidan Doherty ‘20, took first place in the 3000M.

Lamar Ramsey ‘18, finished second in the Triple Jump.

Michael Sponholtz ‘19, took sixth in the long jump. Malachi Hansen ’20, was eighth in the 400M.

The 4 x 200 relay team of Malachi Hansen, Nick Malloy ‘20, Brennan Robinson ‘21, and Michael Sponholtz finished seventh.
Congratulations to Sydney Haye '19, who had a personal record and set a new Triple Jump school record Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at the USATF sanctioned Ocean Breeze Holiday Festival Meet on Staten Island outside of New York City.
Wrestling

Carroll wrestler Jack McQuaid was Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week in December.

The junior 170-pounder, the Catholic League champion last season, finished first at the Upper Merion Viking Classic by pinning all three of his opponents.

Crew alumni return to Carroll

The first-ever Carroll Crew Alumni "Practice” was held Dec 22, with over 40 alumni returning to see the newly-renovated and painted erg room, catch up with old teammates, and see the latest crop of Carroll rowers. A few brave souls even jumped in on the practice with the current rowers!

Alumni in attendance spanned all seven years of the Crew team’s existence at Carroll, including former captain of the St. Joseph’s University Women’s Rowing Team and current Graduate Assistant Coach at Eastern Michigan, Delaney McGuire (‘12), current senior and co-captain of the St. Joseph’s University Men’s Rowing Team, Claudio Recchilungo (‘14), and eight of the nine members of the 2013 Carroll Girls Varsity 8 that finished fifth in the country. 

The artwork in the erg room was completed by both the current boys’ and girls’ teams and designed by Isa Pimentel ('19) and Lindsay Brogan ('19).

ACTS to stage Bye Bye Birdie

Archbishop Carroll Theatre Society will have auditions for their upcoming Spring musical, Bye Bye Birdie, Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 3:00 pm. Callbacks will be on Thursday, Jan. 18. 

For vocal auditions, students should prepare 16 to 32 bars of a song.  The song should be in a similar style to the musical.

Sheet music is preferred and strongly recommended. Audition songs do not have to be musical theatre, and it should not be from the show. 

Students should wear or bring clothing that allows for movement, as there will be a dance audition.

Sounds of the season

Suzanne Carpenter '18 and Joe O'Brian '18, led a collaborative concert at St Rose of Lima Parish in North Wales, with Rudy Lucente, accompanying on organ.

Lucente is the assistant for Wanamaker Organ, the largest functioning organ in the world. 
Carroll students selected for All Catholic Concert Band

Congratulations to the following students for auditioning and being selected to the All-Catholic Concert Band, which is made up of musicians from across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

The festival takes place at Little Flower High School, Feb. 2-4, 2018.

Distinguished Scholars Award at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)
The Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) is offering the Distinguished Scholars Award to seniors with a minimum 1410 SAT or 30 ACT score; GPA of 3.75 on a 4.0 scale, stellar visual arts and performing arts capabilities, honors and awards from competitions, and leadership skills. Students must be nominated by a teacher or counselor. If qualified, stop by Guidance. Deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2018.

Foreign Language Scholarships at St. John Fisher College
St. John Fisher College is offering two foreign language scholarships to high school seniors. Students should have a proficiency in French or Spanish, minimum 1000 SAT or 19 ACT composite score. Students of all majors are eligible, but priority is given to those students majoring or minoring in a foreign language. Students must apply for admission to the College and be nominated by a teacher or counselor. If qualified, stop by Guidance. Deadline to apply is Jan. 15, 2018.
