Message from Tim Lam

Warren G. Bennis once said "There are two ways of being creative. One can sing and dance. Or one can create an environment in which singers and dancers flourish."  During the creation process of designing the new school facility, extensive thought and effort was placed in the idea of creating new and innovative experiences with the intent of illuminating the learning process and engaging all with an atmosphere conducive for active participation. An authentic concierge and hotel front desk was devised to encourage role play activities and simulate real life scenarios. A design lab featuring avant-garde event trends will inspire new ideas for the future in wedding and event planning. An events center was assembled to host networking functions and social gatherings to facilitate our community building atmosphere.

In an industry that constantly evolves with technology and emerging trends, educating students for the future is essential when developing curriculum for the preparation of exploring a new career path. Our instructors exerted every effort to captivate their audiences with cutting-edge modules to highlight the very best of our industry. Their commitment for excellence sincerely displays a true passion for teaching the next generation of professionals.

Overall, I am genuinely proud of the progress made by TISOH, our award-winning faculty and students.  All of my expectations for this semester have been exceeded due to the reception and feedback from our students, staff and faculty. Keep up the great work!

Sincerely,

Tim Sig

Have you ever thought of a career managing Front Desk or Housekeeping?

Do you have a passion for serving others and creating memorable experiences?

Do you display one or more of the traits listed below? If so, explore your option in entering one of the most sought out careers in hospitality.

#1  Are you a critical thinker?

In a hotel filled with thousands of guests, hotel operations employees must be able to think on their feet while managing the heavy traffic flow with a smile.  With so many guests, the questions and inquiries may be endless.  If you enjoy a great challenge, hotel operations may suit your needs.

#2  Do you like shiny apples?

Attention to detail is a necessity when working in hotel operations.  If you believe in the idiom "leave no stone unturned", this may be your calling.  From shining apples to creasing pillows, the entire experience must be perfect for each and every guest.

#3  Do you have the gift of charm?

Are you the type of person that can see past rainy days and into the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?  Positivity and charm are just some of the many traits needed to be successful in hotel operations.

#4  Are you enjoy being active?

Walking countless miles through a hotel to get the job done is par for the course. Chasing down a specific bedding type or searching through the catalogs of art featured in the room may be some of the special requests received from guests. Being active and busy is definitely connected with a position in hotel operations.

TISOH students visit MGM Resorts Events headquarters

A highlight of TISOH's advanced Event Design and Production certificate course is an instructor guided site tour to the amazing MGM Resorts Events headquarters. The team at MRE are unmatched in what they, which is creating the most spectacular events in Las Vegas that scoop up all the awards each year.  Their headquarters houses their talented team of designers and entertainers, not too mention warehousing all the oversized props used in their many productions.  It is essentially the "disneyland" for event planners.  Our students are most fortunate to have the opportunity of being instructed by MRE event director Lenny Talarico, who is pictured above.

Rodney's Corner

Hello! My name is Rodney Nelson (TISOH alum 2012).

I currently serve on the alumni association board as the Community Relations Chair. Once a month, I will give our readers different organizations to join in the hospitality industry to assist with networking and helping each other grow as a community.

Southern Nevada Society for Human Resources Management

The Southern Nevada Human Resources Association (SNHRA) is changing their affiliation name to The Southern Nevada Society for Human Resource Management (SNSHRM) in June 2015. The Society for Human Resource Management is the world's largest association devoted to human resource management.  With over 250,000 members in 140 countries, professionals around the globe share and educate each other with the latest information. There are more than 575 affiliated chapters within the United States and subsidiary offices in China and India.

The mission and vision of SNSHRM is to serve as an advocate to ensure that policy makers, law makers and regulators are aware of key people concerns facing organizations and the human resource profession.

Although not exclusive to hospitality, The SNSHRM is a great resource to network with human resources professionals throughout the city, state, and country. Both instructors of the HHR course are members of SNSHRM.  To join, please visit http://www.snhra.org/

As a Human Resources professional, I am often asked why employees leave their jobs. I believe most employees do not leave for more money. They usually leave due to feeling defeated or worthless. Work is not just about earnings potential. It is about "Potential". If employees feel there is no potential to grow or have their voice heard, they usually part ways. Here are three ways to improve morale.

3 WAYS to improve morale and productivity in an organization

#1

Employees are the lifeblood of any organization - Listen and Learn

If management does not have the aptitude or patience to listen to their employees, the organization will suffer immensely. Without mutual trust, the dysfunction will grow at an expedited pace. Although leaders may have advanced through experience, friendships or credentials, listening is one of the most important skills in leadership. When managers fail to listen or continue to have one-sided conversations, the employees will also fail to listen. If you are a quick tempered manager who makes assumptions and creates stories based on those assumptions without facts, take a deep breath and try to see the whole picture before jumping to conclusions.

#2

Recognition and Reward - Praise the Positive

If you are a leader who writes one-sided nit-picky performance reviews without highlighting your employee's accolades or achievements, your employees will begin to feel unappreciated and underutilized. Most employees enjoy contributing and appreciate the small rewards and simple phrase "Thank you."

--------------------------------------------------------

#3

Do not make promises you cannot keep - Honesty is the only Policy

If a manager makes a promise for a promotion, project, or potential increase, they should always honor their word. Most companies make every effort to ensure their employees are honest and act with integrity. The company should return the favor by ensuring management is open and honest.
