Message from Tim Lam

July is hot. In so many ways! The temperature is sizzling in Vegas and the atmosphere is also. This is the month of many conferences where we highlight networking and celebrate friendships.
Earlier in the month, TISOH will be attending the NACE Experience in Scottsdale, Arizona. A number of school administrators, faculty and alum will descend on the city to learn about the newest in catering and events. Colin Cowie will inspire with his over the top events. With learning also comes fellowship and having fun with colleagues from across the country. It is these connections that builds one's future.

Later in the month TISOH administrators will be in New Orleans for the Les Clefs d'Or USA Congress. Sharing the news of the upcoming Certified Hotel Concierge certification will be a highlight.

Wishing everyone a wonderful summer.

Sincerely,

TISOH Executive Director

TISOH launches CHC Certified Hotel Concierge certification

We are proud to announce the Certified Hotel Concierge certificate (CHC) at the recent Les Clefs d'OR USA Conference in New Orleans, LA. The CHC certificate was created with the partnership of Les Clefs d'Or USA and the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute.

"This is a hallmark moment for one of the most high-profile fields in the hospitality industry, and it's intended to promote a standard for delivering the highest-level of guest services," TISOH Executive Director Timothy M. Lam said. "Despite a plethora of guides and manuals for aspiring and working concierge professionals, no current standards exist. Meanwhile, the hospitality industry itself is seeing the value of concierge services more than ever, with increasing demands for top-notch concierge services.

TISOH Students explore the wonderful city of Las Vegas

Throughout the summer, many of our students went outside of their classroom studies and explore the many unique offerings of Las Vegas that is relevant to their studies.  Our Wedding Coordination and Design students visited Floral Couture by Floral 2000 where they spent the afternoon learning floral design and arrangements.  In addition, our Hospitality Human Resources students toured the suites located inside Palms Casino Resort along with a presentation by their Director of Human Resources, Chris Tamura.

Above, our Hotel Operations students attended the Housekeeping Olympic Games at the Encore Resort. Every year, various Housekeeping Departments in the Las Vegas hotel properties compete on bed making, mop race, and vacuum races for bragging rights to be the #1 Hotel Housekeeping Department of the City.

As part of their studies, TISOH students are also required to complete their externships. These externships provide our students on-the-job training and get an insight as to what their future careers will be in the industry.  From working at the front desk of a major resort to planning a corporate event, our students will be well versed upon their completion of the school. Below is a student assisting an industry event at Wet N Wild Waterpark with Aimee Lyon of IntroDeuce Las Vegas.

TISOH attends NACE conference in Scottsdale AZ

TISOH administrators and alums attended the National Association for Catering and Events EXPERIENCE conference at Scottsdale Princess resort with tremendous aplomb. TISOH Exec Director Tim Lam serves as the Foundation of NACE President and TISOH Director of Academic Affairs Donnell Bayot is the NACE National 2nd VP.  The three night event showcased the best in the events industry and kicked off with a spectacular address from Colin Cowie celebrity planner!  TISOH alums Shawndra and Emily Grace were also able to make the trip as part of the NACE student chapter from Las Vegas. Congratulations to the NACE Las Vegas chapter for winning Chapter of the Year!

Distinguished Alumni Award Series - Juliet Douglas 2006

As part of our yearlong anniversary celebration, we highlight one alum from each of our ten years.  In 2006, Juliet Douglas graduated from the Wedding Coordination and Design certificate.  She has gone on to establish one of the premier event and wedding design companies in Las Vegas, Green Orchid Events (www.greenorchidevents.com).  Angelica MacDonnell, also a graduate of the same program, joined her team shortly thereafter and their company has simply taken off from that point onwards.  TISOH is so proud of Juliet's success and we wish her all the best for the future.

Hotels of the New Millennium

Welcome back to the 2nd edition of the Ask Anthony column where no hospitality industry topic is off limits!

This month's hot topic is on "Fancy Restaurants no more?"

A few weeks ago, I was taking a leisurely stroll down Las Vegas Boulevard and deciding where is a good place to eat for dinner. I was dressed nicely with my button down shirt, comfortable slacks, and shoes that were shining brighter than the Luxor Pyramid. I believe this was good time to take advantage of eating at a fine dining establishment but noticed the limited amount of options when it comes to the newer and recently opened dining venues.

Next to me is a burger chain from the east coast called Shake Shack and across the street is another Chili's Restaurant inside the Hawaiian Marketplace. In addition, I noticed some of the celebrity chefs like Bobby Flay and Gordon Ramsay have also opened up casual fares like Bobby's Burger Palace and Gordon Ramsay Burgr respectively. While neither of these establishments required a suit and a tie, I can't help but be amazed that these casual fares drew in long lines of crowds internationally.

In other words, where have all the fancy restaurants gone? The list of restaurants that opened just this year (2015) includes the following: Tom's Urban, Off the Strip, Border Grill at Forum Shops, and Hexx Las Vegas. All of which are simple casual fare with a dose of fun and energetic atmosphere.

Nowadays, food connoisseurs are more than likely seeking something delectable but affordable. No more seeking out the most expensive plate on the menu. What are your thoughts on this recent trend?
