Message from Tim Lam

Our 27th graduation reception was both inspiring and thought provoking. LynnAnn Martin was our special guest speaker and touched upon a subject that really struck a chord in my mind. She spoke about the impact of choices and how each of us has the ability to choose the direction of our careers and most importantly, our lives.

Throughout the nine years that I have been associated with TISOH, I have had the opportunity to see students make both good and bad choices.  Many students have flourished and made sound decisions that will forever dictate the success of their careers. On the other hand, some chose to stop before they even started. The most important lesson is that we have to live with these choices.

The bright side of reflecting on some of the bad choices that we made is that there is always time to try and fix it by creating new opportunities and outlets to flourish in. In the end, the ability to choose may be the greatest gift of all as it may lead to a path of discovery and self-reflection.

Sincerely,

Tim Sig

As a Human Resources professional, I would like to share my:

5 reasons why you should never allow someone else to make your career choices

During a span of a working life, there will opportunities to make career choices or changes that may or may not bring a person closer to their goals. Some rely on mentors or current management to make those choices for them. I always suggest that career choices should only be made by the person who has the most risk involved.  Although we may rely on guidance to help lead us towards a specific path, the ultimate decision should be made by the individual who is working the actual job.

Tip #1

Human Resources works for the company and not the individual

Human Resources can be a great outlet to visit for career development or opportunities. They should not be your decision maker. Although the classes and offerings can excel or propel your career, you should only rely on HR as a resource. In the end, their best interest is in the company and those that work for the company.

--------------------------------------------------------

Tip #2

One bad boss should not spoil the whole bunch

If you work for an amazing company with potential for growth opportunities, do not let one bad boss dictate a change in your career. If you can wait it out, do not let one individual knock you off of achieving your overall goals. Dealing with difficult people is the nature of the job. Try to grin and bear it until you get what you want.

--------------------------------------------------------

Tip #3

Just because your work friends think you should be promoted does not mean they are correct

Peer pressure can cause a person to make drastic career changes. You may have recently interviewed for a promotion and have been denied. While eating lunch, those gathered around the table console you and tell you that you would have been the right choice. This infuriates you and causes you to look for other jobs. Do not let the words of your peers change your decisions. Most of the time, the people around the table would not tell you that you were not the right candidate even if it was true.

--------------------------------------------------------

Tip #4

Your spouse wants more money

Are outside forces dictating your professional career? If so, this is not out of the ordinary. The key is to make the best decision that will benefit you in the long term.  If another company is offering 5-10% more to make a change, it may not be worth going to if career opportunities are more available at your current workplace. Although money plays a huge role, it should not be the only factor for the reason to change jobs.

--------------------------------------------------------

Tip #5

Your favorite boss was offered a new job and wants to take you with them

This happens all the time and can be a win-win situation. Before you jump to a new company, research their brand and make sure it offers more than your current job.  I have seen this also turn bad as your boss is also new to the company and may not have the same influence that they may have had in the previous company.
