Letter from the Artistic Director

Wow, what a wacky month May turned out to be huh?  Chock full of crazy weather, egg on the face for the IRS, rumor mongering, journalistic integrity gone awry, and a so-called filled-stick that when I got home from what used to be my favorite bakery, turns out, wasn't filled at all!  Now there's some real injustice for you.

Let's hope June proves better for all of us.  Lord knows we deserve it.  And what better way to improve our situation than with the funniest show of the year to end our 80th Anniversary Main Stage season with, The Drowsy Chaperone.  The gals will love The Drowsy Chaperone because it's filled with zany characters, laugh-out-loud dialogue, and silly tunes.  The guys will love it because it's just one act!

Directed by Deb Calabrese and jam-packed with a stellar all-star cast, (and one of the friendliest casts too I might add) complete with refreshing new faces nicely blended with some long-time favorites, The Drowsy Chaperone is a family-friendly musical sure to brighten up your sour outlook on life, if you have a sour outlook on life.  If you don't, just imagine your outlook after catching this knee-slapper. Buy your tickets here.

Additionally during the month of June we've got auditions by appointment for our 81st Season opener, the hysterical musical revue, Forbidden Broadway, also directed by the incomparable Deb Calabrese.  For audition info please click here.

And while you plot out your summer plans, I urge you to please check out what our Young Rep'sters are up to, with our Young Rep production of the musical Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Rosie Best, playing the Tenth Street stage July 18-21.  Following Tevye and the gang we have our production of the musical Guys and Dolls Jr., directed by Eileen Eddy, scheduled for August 8-11.  Two fine shows directed by two wonderful people. Tickets are just $10 for adults and $5 for the kids and it's a great way to see the quality of what the youth are learning at the Rep as you ponder where to send your young thespian in the family for the upcoming year of theatre classes. Speaking of which, you'll want to check out the summer theatre camp offerings we've lined up too, by clicking here

And finally, our 81st Season brochures are being stuffed and mailed in a matter of days, but in the mean-time here's reminder of what we have lined up for next season.

Useless Theatre Trivia

The international hit musical Annie made its world premiere at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut on August 10, 1976. However, the title role of Annie was originally created by actress Kristen Vigard, who was replaced after a week of performances by one of the girls playing one of the other orphans, an actress named Andrea McArdle.

The producers felt Ms Vigard's portrayal was too genuinely sweet and didn't match up with the character being as street-smart as they wanted for Annie. Ms Vigard went on to become the understudy for Ms McArdle. That's gotta stink.

C. Sintz from Deshler writes...I love the musicals!  In fact when I was a senior in high school I played Constance Cloddlehooper in our school's production of Constance, the Captain, and the Color Blind Communist.  I sing all the time; in the shower, in the car, at work, restaurants, family functions, church, karaoke, morning, noon, and night, you name it!  All my friends and family say I should be on Broadway, and they're probably right.  I've been thinking of sharing the beauty of my voice with the folks at the Rep.  Do you hold open auditions for your shows?

Dear C, first of all congratulations on possessing such a hearty heaping helping of self-confidence.  I'm sure all that singing never gets...annoying.  To answer your question though, the Toledo Rep holds auditions for every show they present.  With very few exceptions, all roles are open for all shows.  Next year there are just two pre-cast roles, that being the role of Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, to be played by the very handsome and charming Paul Causman, and the role of Maxine in the Rep's production of Moonglow, to be portrayed by the lovely and talented Madge Levinson.  Other than those two roles, everything else is as open as a 7-11 at two in the morning when you're looking for that pack of smokes, a 200-ounce Mountain Dew, and package of powdered donuts.  But enough about me.

To get on the Rep's "Casting Call" email list just send a quick note with your name and email address to sburnette@toledorep.org or kmcgovern@toledorep.org  and you'll be kept abreast of any and all opportunities to share the beauty of that voice of yours.  Can't wait to hear you, really.  Thanks for writing.
