Theme for 2015-2016~
THINK!  This is our theme again for 2015-2016.  THINK stands for Trustworthy, Honesty, Integrity, Non-violent, Kindness.  We will emphasize and recognize our students when they commit to this belief.  We want our students to make the most of each day by giving their best, seeking ways to help our school be a better place, always striving to improve, and entering the building each day with a great attitude.  Please encourage your children to THINK each day before they arrive at school.

Mr. Chambers
News from the Counselor ~  Mrs. Benner
Our Character Trait for January is INTEGRITY

-Doing the right thing when someone is watching and when NO ONE is watching.

News from the Counselor ~  Mrs. Benner

It is time for Banana Splits groups to begin meeting. For those of you unfamiliar with the Banana Splits program, it is a support group for students who have experienced a change in family structure. This change could include a divorce, separation, living with a stepparent, foster parent, etc. Situations such as these can be very stressful for both children and their families. The Banana Splits group provides a safe place for students to share their thoughts and feelings with other children who are dealing with similar issues. The group also provides an opportunity for children to learn ways of coping with the changes taking place in their lives.
The group will meet weekly during the school day for approximately 30 minutes. We will meet for 6 weeks. Our first meeting will be the week of February 8.
All of the students are encouraged to talk about the meetings at home, but to only share what they themselves have learned, not what others have discussed. I lead the groups and parents will be notified of any serious unresolved issues with their child. If you would like your child to participate please email Mrs. Benner at [email protected] or call at 317-852-1060.

High Ability Identification for 2016-2017 ~
Identification for High Ability programming for the next school year will begin later this month and be concluded by Spring Break. In 1 st grade, students who met specific criteria on the CogAT administered in November, will proceed further in the identification process and parent permission will be required for further assessment which will occur in February. Results of the CogAT are available from the school counselor, if requested. Identification of 5 th grade students for middle school placements will begin in February and parent permission will be required for Language Arts assessments. All 5 th grade students will participate in math placement assessments. A parent whose child has not been recommended for the assessment process but has evidence of strong, high ability qualities/performance, should contact the school principal to discuss the appropriateness of assessment. Additional questions about the High Ability program can be directed to Julie Van Liew, Coordinator of Curriculum and Special Programs at 852-5726.
